March is upon us, and that can only mean one thing. Actually, it can mean a lot of things – your heifers are calving; the corrals are a soupy quagmire; you really need to get started on your taxes – but for our purposes here, March means one thing: March Madness, baby.

The February Feed Outlook report shows no changes to the 2024-25 U.S. corn supply and demand outlook this month. Corn cash prices are rising in tandem with strong demand for U.S. corn. Consequently, the average 2024-25 corn price is projected 10 cents higher at $4.35 per bushel.

The high school basketball season was approaching its end. There were just two semi-grueling weeks left in the season before the conference and district playoffs. As much as we love the sport, there was no denying that the grind of the season was wearing a little bit on me, my fellow coaches and the dozen or so daughters of small-town southern Idaho who made up our little band of hardwood warriors.

A vaccine plan is part of a sound preventive herd health plan. The vaccines that should be included will vary some depending on type of operation (cow-calf, stocker, etc.), geographic location, risk level and herd health history. However, a clostridial vaccine is one vaccine that is probably critical for all cow-calf operations.

I think now is a good time to look at your cattle herd and evaluate crossbreeding.

First-calf heifers are demanding not only due to potential calving difficulties but also because they have the greatest nutrient needs in the herd, and their reproductive performance has long-term effects on herd success.
