Japanese convenience stores upgrade image with U.S. beef

FamilyMart, a Japanese convenience store chain with more than 9,500 outlets, has teamed with the U.S. Meat Export Federation (USMEF) to revamp the company’s menu with high-quality U.S. beef. The two groups — with check-off funding from the Texas Beef Council, Oklahoma Beef Council and the Beef Checkoff Program and support from the USDA Market Access Program — created a 10-item U.S. beef menu that includes a bento (lunch) box, rice bowl, salad, sandwich, soba noodle, sushi and soup.

Texas A&M meat specialist honored for industry contributions

Davey Griffin, a Texas A&M AgriLife Extension Service meat specialist, has been named American Meat Science Association fellow and Signal Service Award winner. The award, sponsored by Keystone Foods, Johnsonville Sausage Co. and Elanco Animal Health, is given in recognition of devoted service and lasting contributions to the meat industry and association.

Texas and Oklahoma to jointly host cattle and wheat event

Despite three years of difficult dry conditions, agriculture producers in southern Oklahoma and northern Texas continue to plant crops and grow cattle. New research and technology on these conditions will be the focus of the Cattle Trails Wheat and Stocker Cattle Conference, a joint effort between Texas A&M AgriLife Extension Service and Oklahoma Cooperative Extension Service.

Wyoming cattle ranch receives conservation award

Padlock Ranch, recipient of the 2013 Leopold Conservation Award in Wyoming, was recently honored for voluntary achievement in conservation by Governor Matt Mead at the Wyoming Cattle Industry Convention & Trade Show in Cheyenne. The $10,000 award, named for renowned conservationist Aldo Leopold, was presented to the ranch by Sand County Foundation, Wyoming Stock Growers Association (WSGA) and Peabody Energy.

Equine infectious anemia cases confirmed in Nebraska horses

The Nebraska Department of Agriculture (NDA) has confirmed 12 cases of equine infectious anemia (EIA) in one horse herd located in Northwestern Nebraska. State Veterinarian Dr. Dennis Hughes said EIA affects only horses, mules and donkeys, and is usually fatal to these animals. No other animals or humans can be infected with this disease.
