Center for Food Safety unveils state-of-the-art laboratory testing facility

October 18, 2012
A new state-of-the-art laboratory equipped with instrumentation to allow rapid foodborne pathogen testing and characterization was showcased recently at The Science Park in College Station. The new facility is designed to support the efforts of faculty who are members of the Center for Food Safety, a collaborative effort by Texas A&M AgriLife Research, Texas A&M AgriLife Extension Service and Texas A&M University. “We have never had access to a shared facility like this before,” said Gary Acuff, director.

Merck Animal Health expands beef technical services team

Four new technical services managers have joined the Merck Animal Health beef cattle team, including two nutritionists and two veterinarians.The expanded beef technical services team will provide greater expertise and resources for producers, veterinarians and industry influencers. Joining the Merck Animal Health team are nutritionists Mark Corrigan, Ph.D., and Ben Holland, Ph.D., and veterinarians Brent Meyer, D.V.M., M.S., and Justin Welsh, D.V.M.

JBS USA signs agreement with XL Foods

JBS USA, a leading animal protein processor in the U.S. and Australia and a wholly owned subsidiary of Brazil-based JBS S.A., today announced an agreement with XL Foods to manage one of the company's Canadian operations. The agreement also provides JBS USA an exclusive option to purchase the Canadian and U.S. operations of XL Foods. XL will continue to manage its other Canadian and U.S. operations during the option period.

Drought-stricken Montana ranchers sell calves early

October 18, 2012
Some ranchers in Montana are selling calves early after a summer that left them battered by drought, fires and high feed prices. Tim Kiefer has a beef ranch north of Forsyth. He told the Billings Gazette that since the first of April, he's had just two inches of rain on his land. That means his pastures that yielded 1,200 round hay bales last year couldn't muster even one this year. The dry weather left his cattle with little forage, so he weaned his calves and shipped them to sale yards five weeks earlier than normal.

August beef exports lower than a year ago

October 16, 2012
Despite a continued slump in U.S. red meat export volume and a further dip in August sales, the value of beef and pork exports for the first eight months of the year remained slightly ahead of 2011’s record-setting pace, according to statistics released by USDA and compiled by the U.S. Meat Export Federation (USMEF).

McHale’s new integrated bale wrapper

Specializing in the production of round and square bale wrappers, McHale – a family-run business based in County Mayo, Ireland – has developed a wide range of agricultural machinery. The most recent introduction is the McHale Fusion 3 Integrated Baler. The wrapper consists of an 18-roller, fixed-chamber baler and integrated vertical wrapping ring. The machine combines two traditionally separate jobs, baling and bale wrapping, into a single operation that can be performed by one man and one machine.

The McCook Farm & Ranch Expo returns Nov. 14-15 to the Red Willow County Fairgrounds near McCook, Nebraska, located in the center of the rich farmland and cattle feedlots of southwest Nebraska and northwest Kansas. "It's a great place to come see the newest and latest in farming and ranching practices and technology," said Darren Dale, show manager. "We are expecting 350 vendors from 20 states, Canada and Australia."
