QLF announces new plants, agreements, expansions and products

May 9, 2012
Quality Liquid Feeds, Inc. (QLF) has completed a new liquid feed manufacturing plant in Clovis, New Mexico. With this expansion, QLF will increase the ability to serve dairy, cow/calf, feedlot, pelleted feeds and texturized feed markets. Construction for the facility began in August 2011 and was completed in January. From this location, QLF will service primarily Texas, Colorado, Kansas, New Mexico and Utah.

  Bovance -- a joint-venture between Trans Ova Genetics of Sioux Center, Iowa, and ViaGen of Austin, Texas -- has chosen Branden Zuck from Ames, Iowa, as the winner of the second Bovance Scholarship Contest. Applicants submitted essays related to cloning and its benefit to the agriculture industry. Zuck is currently a sophomore at Iowa State University majoring in Animal Science with a Pre-Veterinary focus.

FDA issues new guidelines on antibiotic usage

May 8, 2012
The U.S. Food and Drug Administration on April 13 released new guidelines for tightening human-use antimicrobial drugs in food-producing animals. Specifically targeted in the documents are antibiotic drugs used for feed efficiency and growth promotion in livestock/poultry and producers using the antibiotics without the consultation of a veterinarian.

Market effects of BSE case, LFTB issue

The news of a fourth confirmed U.S. case of Bovine Spongiform Encephalopathy (BSE) has, for the most part, been digested by the market place. Exports appear to be shored up with Indonesia, a minor beef buyer, the only country choosing to suspend imports of U.S. beef. The latest export data through April 26 show a slight increase in total weekly sales compared to the previous week, 16,800 metric tons versus 15,500, but still below the rolling four week average of weekly export sales, 18,230.
