Try new things

March 4, 2025
Julianne McCormick

As kids, we are often told to try new things. Whether it is a new food, or a new activity, or sport. Starting something new is supposed to be an opportunity to expand your horizons, see what you’re good at or enjoy and learn from your mistakes. Even in our adult lives, trying new things is a great way to continue learning, but sometimes as adults I feel like we are more intimidated to say yes than when we were kids.

Cattlemen’s College: Sustainability of beef industry continues to advance

At CattleCon, Ruaraidh Petre from the Global Roundtable for Sustainable Beef highlighted the cattle industry’s strides in sustainability, as well as where there remains room for improvement.
March 3, 2025
Tyrell Marchant

At no time in the history of livestock agriculture have producers been more efficient at producing beef than they are now. Just in the last half-century, global beef production has nearly doubled, despite a historically small herd size.

Are you maximizing colostrum’s potential for better calf health and herd productivity?

Colostrum's impact on calf health is certainly no secret, but optimizing colostrum quality can be more challenging. Increasing antioxidant availability late in gestation could improve quality.
March 3, 2025
Victoria Asselstine, Sarah Dean, and Gerald Mechor

Colostrum serves as more than just the first feeding; it is the cornerstone of the calf's health and development. Addressing the challenges in harvesting and feeding colostrum requires a multifaceted approach, combining quality control, nutritional strategies and management practices to ensure calves receive the best possible start in life.

Polled: Why does it matter?

With the help of genomic testing, using polled sires in dairy herds no longer threatens production levels. Producers can see polled animals in one generation.
March 3, 2025
Adrianne Trennepohl

Similar to our beef counterparts, we could someday assume that all dairy cows are polled. Because of genetic improvement, that assumption is closer than we might think. Don’t wait until the industry shifts. The future is polled.

The Outside Circle: A hard row to hoe

March 3, 2025
Gus Brackett

My favorite ag-related cliché is, “Make hay when the sun shines.” I use this phrase to encourage my children to complete a task when the opportunity is ripe. I also use this phrase to encourage my baler operator to plant his keister in the seat of a tractor when the weather is prime. Ag clichés have a poignant meaning both on the farm and in polite society.

Genetically mitigating risk for bovine congestive heart failure

One of the biggest challenges facing feedlot operators is the threat of cattle developing congestive heart failure as they approach slaughter. Can we alleviate that liability by taking a closer look at cattle’s genetic makeup?
March 3, 2025
Kirk Ramsey

Over the past decade, bovine congestive heart failure (BCHF) has emerged as one of the biggest threats to the health and productivity of cattle on feed.

Be where your feet are

March 1, 2025
Matti McBride

As I write this, I’m flying home from Florida. I’ve spent the past two days in a room full of fellow dairy enthusiasts at the Young Dairy Leaders Institute (YDLI). I signed up for this leadership opportunity seeking to connect with members of the dairy community my age and am leaving the program with exactly that and a new skill set I’m excited to utilize.
