Mechanics Corner: Diesel engines, then and now

February 24, 2011
Levi Perkins
It is not uncommon to open the hood of a new diesel pickup and see a slew of wires and hoses and underneath it all something which resembles an engine. What happened to the good old days when we used to actually be able to see the engine and be able to work on it when we popped the hood? How did we get to this point with the light-duty diesel industry? Let’s take a step back in time when Ford and GM and Chrysler introduced their light-duty diesel engines. The year was 1983 and the engine was the 6.2-liter diesel.

Minimize emergency calls from freestall-housed cows: Provide adequate lunge space

February 24, 2011
Jeffrey Bewley
Most of us remember the medical emergency system commercials from the 1990s with the elderly lady calling out “Help, I’ve fallen and I can’t get up.” Would you ever receive these types of calls from within your freestall barns if your cows had some type of medical emergency system from which they could call you? Unfortunately, in many older freestall barns, these calls would probably be fairly frequent. Generally, cows prefer to lunge forward when rising from a resting position. Think about how a cow gets up when she is on pasture. Their behavior in freestalls should be similar to this.

Happy, healthy cows are more productive

February 21, 2011
Curt Bossuyt
The world today seems to be moving at an increasingly rapid pace. Agriculture has seen more challenging times to remain profitable and sustainable. This pressure can affect our decisions when designing, building or modifying dairy facilities that can influence cow comfort. Providing adequate cow comfort has a direct impact on milk production, health, reproduction, longevity and profitability. This article will focus on some of the key areas including stall design, bedding, overcrowding and flooring. Let’s put this more into perspective. An average adult male requires approximately 1,800 to 2,400 calories per day for maintenance of life.

Ohio producer takes advantage of technology with robots

February 15, 2011
Jane Sweet
to jump to the article. Summary: In a February e-newsletter, we reprinted an article from Dairy Farmers of America's Mideast Area Council, featuring Joe Ramsier and two recently installed Lely robots on his Rittman, Ohio, dairy. We asked Ramsier to provide some insight on his decision to make the change in his operation. We recently learned that Ramsier's dairy suffered a barn fire in July, resulting in the loss of the main barn, one of the robots, the milkhouse and office, as well as several pieces of equipment. Ramsier remains positive as his family begins to rebuild the operation. "Thankfully no animals or people were hurt or lost," he told us in an email. Because this article was so popular, we asked Ramsier and a Lely representative follow-up questions: Q: What is another example of new technology you're looking to implement?

Mechanics Corner: Electrical system team players

February 3, 2011
Jim Schlund
This is the concluding segment on electrical systems. In the future, however, I will be discussing specific areas of electrical systems. The battery, starter and alternator are the three electrical team players. Without them, nothing will happen. In past columns, we have discussed the battery and the starter. Now we’ll move on to alternators. Batteries only last a certain period of time and you can only make so many starts. Not only that, when the battery starts the engine, the energy taken from the battery storage has to be replenished. The alternator is the part that restores energy back into the battery in a safe manner.

Do cows adapt quickly to being milked by robots?

February 2, 2011
Jacquelyn Jacobs and Janice Siegford
Last summer, the milking herd at MSU’s Kellogg Biological Station Pasture Dairy Research and Education Center (PDREC) moved into a new freestall barn, equipped with two robotic milkers. We collected data on the cows’ responses to being milked by the new system. The information allowed us to evaluate how well cows adjusted to being milked by robots.
