With warmer weather on the horizon, the thought of flies around the farm starts to become a concern. Flies not only spread disease-causing bacteria but also can lower milk production.
It only takes five stable flies biting on the front legs of a cow to reduce weight gains and milk yields, according to Alec Gerry, a University of California – Davis veterinary entomology specialist.
The problem
Flies can be costly to dairy farmers due to disease transmission and irritation. Whether feeding upon animals or simply being a nuisance, flies can reduce milk production and decrease weight gains.
Nuisance flies are a vector of disease and an irritant to cattle and workers on a dairy operation. Because of the confined nature of a dairy, it is important to use an integrated pest management (IPM) program for effectively controlling fly populations.
It’s hot outside and that means pesky, profit-robbing flies. And if you haven’t already started on your fly control program for the year, you may be losing more than you bargained for, as flies are known to carry both animal and human diseases.
