The beef side of dairy

July 1, 2014
Peggy Coffeen
Dairy producers are beef producers too, which is why it is important to ensure meat quality by preventing injection site lesions and drug residues.

What’s hiding behind the hide?

June 30, 2014
Peggy Coffeen
Think back to the last cow you sent to market. If you peeled back her hide, what would you find? Bruising? Injection site lesions? Tissue damage? Would you be proud to say that cow came from your dairy?

Are dairymen responsible when meat recalls occur?

June 30, 2014
Dave Wilkins
A massive beef recall linked to the processing of cull dairy cows at a California slaughterhouse appears to be an isolated case in which the federal meat inspection system failed, industry participants say. Earlier this year, the USDA issued a recall of nearly nine million pounds of beef produced at the Rancho Feeding Corp. plant in Petaluma, California. The recall amounted to a full year’s worth of production at the plant that was later shut down.

Hoof-blocking best practices

June 30, 2014
Dana J. Tomlinson
Hoof blocks are an important component of the lameness management toolbox. Diseased or overtrimmed claws are both likely candidates to receive therapeutic hoof blocks. Blocking helps provide much-needed relief from weight-bearing by transferring weight onto the healthy claw so the damaged claw has sufficient time to heal.

Digital dermatitis: A recipe for successful control

June 30, 2014
Doerte Doepfer and Arturo Gomez
In the U.S., even on well-managed dairies, there’s a good chance that digital dermatitis (DD) is present. It is highly contagious and if left unchecked can cause painful ulcerations that often lead to lameness. Common practices for controlling DD have been limited to footbaths and topical treatment of severe lesions with no clearly established guidelines for optimal management.

Address hoof health before robotic milking facility transition

June 30, 2014
Paul Berdell
Preparing cows’ feet for the transition to a robotic system should be a fairly easy task for most dairy farms to accomplish well in advance. Usually the system and tools needed are already in place to prepare hooves before the robots start, so there are just a few straightforward things to do to ensure hooves are protected during and after transition.

Heat stress and the cattle claw

June 30, 2014
Vic Daniel
While summer is one of the more pleasant times to look forward to after a rough winter and wet spring, it requires a bit of annual thought to protect the production level the dairy farm seeks to achieve. Weather variability, too, can provide challenges that influence foot health of dairy cattle.

How Do I Determine?: How do I calculate Temperature-Humidity Index (THI)?

June 11, 2014
Todd Bilby
Q. Why is this a top resource article? "Research continues to focus on ways to alleviate heat stress through genetic advancement and knowledge around genes that are important in alleviating heat load, hormonal manipulation such as the use of human chorionic gonadotropin to improve pregnancy retention, feed additives that potentially reduce core body temperature and, lastly, advancements in cooling systems and areas of opportunities with cooling such as dry cows." —Todd Bilby, Merck Animal Health The Temperature-Humidity Index (THI) is a valuable measure that you know when cows are becoming heat-stressed and to what degree so you can use cooling methods appropriately. Heat stress is caused by a combination of temperature, relative humidity, solar radiation, air movement and precipitation. The majority of studies on heat stress in livestock focus on the two main environmental stressors: temperature and relative humidity (RH).

How relevant is subacute ruminal acidosis (SARA)?

June 11, 2014
Advances in forage genetics, harvesting, ensiling, management practices and forage analysis – in addition to dynamic ration balancing software – have allowed dairy farms to progressively feed increasing amounts of forage to their lactating cows. High-forage, lactating cow rations are typically defined as those containing more than 55 percent forage in the TMR or more than 25 percent forage neutral-detergent fiber (NDF) on a dry matter (DM) basis.
