3 open minutes with Shannon Squibb

November 11, 2010
Dairy producer and blogger Shannon Squibb shared with Progressive Dairyman Editor Emily Caldwell how she uses social media to connect with and educate mothers about dairy. Q. When did #dairymom chats on Twitter begin? How did you get involved? A. SQUIBB: I was invited, along with seven other “dairy moms” from across the Midwest, by Midwest Dairy Association to learn how to communicate with consumers (and moms) using social media.

A woman’s touch can help sidestep health issues in calves

November 11, 2010
Raising dairy calves is a delicate combination of science and art. Often, the best observers of the subtleties in calf health – and thus the most successful calf caretakers – are women. Pneumonia is a primary calfhood disease that continually challenges calf raisers. In this roundtable, we talk to four female calf raisers from across the country about how they navigate pneumonia to raise healthy, productive, profitable calves and heifers. Panelists include: • Sherry Arnold, Busses’ Barron Acres in Barron, Wis. • Hanneke den Ouden, Milky Way Dairy in Maricopa, Ariz. • Debbie Feldpausch, Sonrise Farm in Westphalia, Mich. • Cassie Miller, Dream Farms in Newburg, Pa.

5 Things I can't do without: Fred McGuillvray

November 11, 2010
With the present economic crisis, farmers still need supplies and support, and Fred McGuillvray is no exception. After moving his dairy to three different Pennsylvania locations, McGuillvray has finally settled in Newville, Pennsylvania, and made the life he always wanted – owning a milking herd of 100 Holsteins. He explains who and what keeps his business moving. 1. Smith’s Implements Inc. For a dairy farmer hauling his own manure, planting and harvesting different crops and taking care of all the other daily duties on the farm, this local John Deere dealership has a very important role in McGuillvray’s farm. “We can’t operate without them,” McGuillvray says when talking about the dealership. “We go to them a lot, especially in the summer because that is when bearings go bad and parts wear out.”

To bring in a new generation, Meadow Vista Dairy expanded

November 1, 2010
So few young people are willing or able to return to the family farm these days, and those who do are often bogged down with family dynamics and power struggles. Life after selling the dairy farm

October 29, 2010
The day after the auction of the cattle and equipment provides a mix of emotions for a dairyman. There is a bittersweet sense of relief that he is no longer responsible for milking and feeding his herd, but now that he has all this free time to think, he is afraid. What is in store for him in the future? As he stands in the vacant freestall barn, he starts to wonder what will happen to him and his family now that he no longer has to be on duty 24/7. He starts to worry. What is he going to do? Maybe selling the farm was not a good idea after all. After the sale of the real estate closes, he will have 30 to 60 days left to live in the farmhouse. Where will he be living after that? Who is going to hire a middle-aged man who has always milked cows and worked for himself? The feelings of anxiety are natural. The dairyman is leaving his comfort zone and walking into the unknown.

3 open minutes with Dennis Wolff

October 11, 2010
Dairy Policy Action Coalition lobbyist and spokesman Dennis Wolff recently spoke with Progressive Dairyman Editor Walt Cooley about the Pennsylvania-based organization’s agenda to ‘clean up’ dairy policy. Wolff discusses the group’s recent efforts to lobby Congress to increase the frequency of dairy product price reporting. Q. How did DPAC get started? WOLFF: A group of dairy farmers started it about 10 months ago with the help of Bernie Morrisey and Sherry Bunting. This was basically a group of producers who wanted less talk and more action. That would be the reason why it is called the Dairy Policy Action Coalition.
