3 open minutes with David Carter

During a recent trip to New Zealand Progressive Dairyman Editor Walt Cooley sat down with New Zealand’s Minister of Agriculture David Carter at Fieldays, the country’s largest ag trade show exhibition. Carter discusses the country’s transition to food production without government subsidies and how his country’s recent signature into the Kyoto Protocol will impact New Zealand’s global ag competitiveness. What’s your background in agriculture? CARTER: I am a sheep-based farmer. I was originally an agricultural farm student and graduate and then immediately went into farming. I had quite a significant involvement in the introduction of some European cattle breeds into New Zealand in the days when embryo transplanting was first developed. I’ve continued to farm since, and I have two properties down in the Canterbury Region (the middle of New Zealand’s south island).

Since coming to WSU in 2006, I have been very involved in all of the dairy programs, including Cooperative University Dairy Students, Dairy Challenge and served as Dairy Club president last year.

My parents own an auction company so we travel around New England and New York, conducting farm dispersals. My grandparents own Laurelbrook Farm in East Canaan, Connecticut, and milk upward of 850 head of Holsteins.

I'm studying agriculture economics, with a minor in business as well as a minor in community leadership development. Q. What is your agricultural background? I was born and raised on a dairy farm in Bowling Green, Kentucky, that my grandfather started in the 1940s. We own a herd of registered Jerseys and are currently milking close to 50. Growing up, I fed baby calves and also milked every day, twice a day. In the year 2003, my family opened an agritourism operation on our farm called Chaney’s Dairy Barn where we sell our own milk and ice cream.

Junior, Missouri State University Intern at Midwest Dairy Association Based in Ozarks, Missouri Background Q. In what area are you pursuing a degree? I'm studying agriculture education and agriculture communications. Q. What is your agricultural background? I was born and raised on a dairy farm owned by my parents, Alby and Angela Bos. We milked and bred registered Brown Swiss and a few Holsteins. We showed and displayed our cattle all across the United States and were even known competitors at the World Dairy Expo. (Many heard of our name through a cow we bred by the name of Timberline Jetway Toni.) I started in 4-H when I was little and stayed active in that program. I also was very active in the Billings FFA chapter throughout high school. I was an officer for 3 years and was an Area XII officer my senior year. I was the first woman from Billings to receive the American FFA Degree.
