2011 World Dairy Expo: Educational seminars focus on industry issues

World Dairy Expo Seminars Industry experts with a vast array of expertise will converge at World Dairy Expo to help dairy operations be more profitable and efficient as part of the 2011 Expo Seminars. Milk better than water to rehydrate kids: McMaster study

August 24, 2011
Active children need to be watered with milk. It's a more effective way of countering dehydration than a sports drink or water itself, say researchers at McMaster University, Hamilton, Ontario, Canada. That's particularly important during hot summer weather, says Brian Timmons, research director of the Child Health and Exercise Medicine Program at McMaster and principal investigator of the study.

School milk consumption decreases

School milk consumption has decreased by 0.6 percent this year from 2010. From 2009 to 2010, it decreased by 2.1 percent, according to an annual survey conducted by MilkPEP.

OpenGate Capital to acquire Waukesha, Wisconsin dairy-processing business from Dean Foods

August 15, 2011
OpenGate Capital, a global private equity firm, has signed a definitive agreement to acquire the Waukesha, Wisconsin-based dairy-processing plant and related assets from Dean Foods Company. OpenGate will acquire the Golden Guernsey(R) and La Vaca Bonita(R) brands as part of the transaction. The business manufactures, bottles and distributes its dairy products to schools, grocery stores, convenience stores and major retailers in Illinois, Michigan and Wisconsin.

No new regulations on CDLs for farm vehicles

The U.S. Department of Transportation’s Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA) announced that it would not seek new regulations requiring farmers and ranchers to obtain commercial drivers’ licenses (CDLs) to transport animals and farm equipment.

World Ag Expo 2012 searches for ‘Top-10’ product entries

World Ag Expo is searching for the newest and most innovative products for World Ag Expo 2012. For the seventh year, a panel of World Ag Expo Top-10 judges will select 10 new products to highlight at the Expo, scheduled for Feb. 14-16. Each entry is evaluated by a panel of production agriculturalists (working farmers and ranchers), agricultural professionals and university representatives. The Top-10 are selected and announced at World Ag Expo, and the winning entries are showcased at the New Products Center.

Clayton County teen named Iowa Dairy Princess

August 11, 2011
Iowa dairy farmers have a new collective voice. She is the new Iowa Dairy Princess, Gina Fisher of Clayton County. Just a night before the start of the Iowa State Fair, Fisher was tapped to take on the title and responsibilities of promoting dairy for the coming year. The coronation was held in the Multi-Media Center in the Cattle Barn at the state fairgrounds in Des Moines, Iowa. Fisher, 17, is the daughter of David and Mary Fisher of Edgewood, Iowa. Fisher was also named Miss Congeniality from among the seven contestants. Jessica Hammerand will assist Fisher as 2011-12 Iowa Dairy Princess Alternate. The Dubuque County teen was also named winner of the presentation portion of the contest. Hammerand, 19, is the daughter of Jeff and Tammy Hammerand of Epworth, Iowa.
