Local elected officials, community leaders, conservation officials and dairy producers are invited to an On-the-Farm Twilight Meeting where important issues can be openly discussed with dairy producers and all attendees can learn from each other.
Iowa dairy farmers have a new collective voice. She is the new Iowa Dairy Princess, Gina Fisher of Clayton County. Just a night before the start of the Iowa State Fair, Fisher was tapped to take on the title and responsibilities of promoting dairy for the coming year. The coronation was held in the Multi-Media Center in the Cattle Barn at the state fairgrounds in Des Moines, Iowa.
Fisher, 17, is the daughter of David and Mary Fisher of Edgewood, Iowa. Fisher was also named Miss Congeniality from among the seven contestants.
Jessica Hammerand will assist Fisher as 2011-12 Iowa Dairy Princess Alternate. The Dubuque County teen was also named winner of the presentation portion of the contest. Hammerand, 19, is the daughter of Jeff and Tammy Hammerand of Epworth, Iowa.
Growers of high quality forages will be rewarded with cash prizes in the 2012 World Ag Expo Forage Challenge, presented by Mycogen Seeds. The competition challenges farmers and ranchers in 11 western states to enter their best alfalfa hay, standard corn silage or brown midrib (BMR) corn silage to honor those who produce the highest-quality forages in the West. The deadline to enter is Dec. 15.
The deadline for the world’s longest-running forage contest featuring the biggest cash payout is around the corner. Only a few days remain to enter the World Forage Analysis Superbowl contest for a chance at more than $22,000 in cash prizes. Silage entries for standard and brown midrib corn silage categories must be received by AgSource Laboratories by Aug. 18. All other forage samples, including dairy hay, haylage, commercial baleage, commercial hay, and the new grass hay category, must be submitted by Sept. 7. The Southern Great Plains Dairy Consortium (SGPDC) program held in Clovis, New Mexico, recently concluded the fourth year of its summer program. SGPDC was established in the summer of 2008 to address the need to improve the availability of dairy science education at universities in the Southwest.
Participating students spend six weeks engaging in classroom instruction and trips to dairies where they obtain practical instruction of materials covered in the classroom.
Topics covered during the six weeks of the program include herd management, dairy facilities, reproduction, nutrition and human resource development.
Dairy producers along the I-29 corridor are invited to a Forum on National Dairy Policy and Immigration Reform to learn more about dairy pricing policy proposals and immigration issues that may impact their operations. The forum will be held from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Tuesday, Aug. 30, at the Ramkota Inn in Sioux Falls, South Dakota. The 100 percent farmer-owned cooperative that makes Borden Cheese has launched its Friends of Elsie Tour, a hands-on exhibit that brings the farm to families through local dairy farmers, on-farm activities and a live country music experience.
People may meet dairy farm families and take part in activities such as, a cow portable milking machine, a cow-to-person height comparison chart, samples of cow feed and an interactive farm game. Information is also available to help consumers understand different types of cheese and butter. Tour stops include community events and state fairs.
Vernice and Dan Moon, Monona, Iowa, have been named the third Robert “Whitey” McKown Master Breeder Award winner, which will be presented at World Dairy Expo in Madison, Wisconsin. The winner of the McKown Master Breeder Award is chosen by the members of the Klussendorf Association.
The award honors a well-managed breeder herd who is successful showing and judging and emphasizes all qualities of the Klussendorf Award, including ability, character, endeavor, and sportsmanship. Vernice and Dan Moon’s Moondale Holstein herd fits every criteria of the McKown Master Breeder Award. Vernice and Dan, along with Vernice’s wife, Bev; Dan’s wife, Nancy; and Dan and Nancy’s children, Kyle, Emily, and Ryan, also are involved with Moondale Holsteins.
Cargill Animal Nutrition has announced it is forming an alliance with Fresno, California-based Integrated Grain and Milling, Inc., (IGM) to fully leverage the marketing teams of each organization. Under this alliance, the marketing teams will act as sales agents for each of the respective companies.
