Butch Lerum of Minnesota/Select Sires Co-op Inc. and Don Mullen of NorthStar Cooperative, have been honored as the Select Mating Service (SMS) genetic consultants of the year. Lerum and Mullen received this award at Select Sires’ national SMS Consultant Conference held in Texas and New Mexico in early May.
This national award is presented annually to genetic consultants who exemplify the qualities that make SMS known worldwide as the premier mating program in the industry to assist dairy producers in developing genetic business plans. The recipient must have years of superior service, a history of high-quality evaluations and the ability to build and maintain successful relationships with dairy producers.
The National Farm-City Council has announced new officers and the chairs of its five standing committees, all dedicated to enhancing links between farm families and urban residents.
A non-profit organization, the Council provides local organizations with educational programs about people who grow our food. In addition, it organizes an annual symposium on a significant topic of interest to both farm and city residents.
This year’s finalists for the title of Princess Kay of the Milky Way have been named. The 12 young women from dairy farm backgrounds were selected at the conclusion of a three-day event for county dairy princesses held in St. Joseph, Minnesota. Each of the 12 will be sculpted in butter during the 2011 Minnesota State Fair. Princess Kay is crowned each year the night before the State Fair opens.
Living out his belief that service involves giving more than receiving led Robert Glock, D.V.M., Ph.D., to receive the Academy of Veterinary Consultants (AVC) Outstanding Service Award. The award was presented at the AVC spring meeting in April in Oklahoma City and was sponsored by Intervet/Schering-Plough Animal Health.
The AVC Outstanding Service Award recognizes a member who has made outstanding contributions to AVC and the beef-cattle and veterinary medicine industries. Glock received a commemorative plaque, and Intervet/Schering-Plough Animal Health donated $2,000 to the AVC Foundation in his honor.
