Annual Northeast Regional Dairy Challenge drew 105 students from 11 colleges

The University of Maine hosted the 10th annual Northeast Regional Dairy Challenge, which drew 105 students from nine northeast colleges and two Canadian universities to Waterville, Maine, Nov. 1-3. New for 2012, a technology seminar for area dairy producers was held in conjunction with Dairy Challenge to offer education, new research and networking.

Milk promotion efforts and dairy policy progress discussed at NDB/NMPF/UDIA Joint Annual Meeting

As usually happens in the fall, the National Milk Producers Federation (NMPF), National Dairy Promotion and Research Board (NDB) and the United Dairy Industry Association (UDIA) met to share in their common accomplishments and challenges, as well as to discuss the best route for the industry's future. This year, the joint annual meeting took place Oct. 29-31 in Orlando, Florida. Nearly 1,000 producer and industry representatives were in attendance. Here are some highlights provided by participating organizations. NMPF leaders evaluate organization’s success at annual meeting During the 2012 annual meeting of the NMPF, Chairman Randy Mooney and President/CEO Jerry Kozak addressed the NMPF membership and discussed the organization’s progress over the past year.

Dairy cattle welfare the focus of new symposium

The first-ever Dairy Cattle Welfare Symposium was hosted recently by the University of Guelph and The Campbell Centre for the Study of Animal Welfare in Guelph, Ontario. The event attracted 300 participants and served as a forum between dairy producers, researchers and allied industry. In this global event, participants hailed from Australia, Canada, Colombia, Costa Rica, Denmark, Finland, Germany, Hungary, Ireland, Israel, Japan, the Netherlands, New Zealand, Norway, Scotland, Sweden, the United Kingdom and the U.S. Most attended in person, while others joined via a live webcast.

Dairy Products Technology Center celebrated 25 years with mini-symposium at Cal Poly

On Oct. 25, as part of its 25-year celebration, the Dairy Products Technology Center (DPTC) held a mini-symposium organized by Rafael Jiménez-Flores at the Cal Poly campus. The topic of the symposium was Dairy Products Technology and Future Innovation Opportunities and leaders from both universities and allied industry provided their insights on the future of the dairy industry.

High-tech ag tools will be spotlight of Amarillo farm show conference

Getting updated information at the touch of a button isn’t new. However, having that capability while standing in a field and making decisions based on that technological connection is a growing market for agriculture. Texas A&M AgriLife Research and Texas A&M AgriLife Extension Service will be participating in a new addition at the Amarillo Farm and Ranch Show, the IDEAg Interconnectivity conference, to discuss some of the latest technology being offered to producers. The conference is set for 9:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. Nov. 29 in the Grand Plaza of the Amarillo Civic Center.

December DAIReXNET webinar focuses on group-housed calves

On December 7, 2012 from noon to 1 p.m. CST, Dr. Mark Thomas will present, "Feeding Systems for Group-Housed Dairy Calves." Thomas is a partner in Countryside Veterinary Clinic, LLP in northern New York. The practice employs eight veterinarians and services about 200 clients. According to the DAIReXNET site, his presentation will focus on optimizing nutrition in a group setting, including tips on practical concepts for ad libitum and acidified feeding.

Missouri dairy convention expands to regional event: Heart of America Dairy Expo, Jan. 25-26

Missouri's statewide dairy convention is expanding to a regional event called the Heart of America Dairy Expo, taking place Jan. 25-26 in Springfield, Missouri. “We are really excited to offer dairy farmers in the Midwest an alternative for educational programming closer to home and directed to our needs,” says Missouri Dairy Association (MDA) President Larry Purdom of Purdy, Missouri. “We picked Springfield for the next two years because it is a natural trade hub and home to many dairy businesses such as Kraft, Mueller, F&S Food Equipment Company, Dairy Farmers of America and Hiland Dairy Foods."

Southwest Dairy Day drew more than 500 visitors

Texas A&M AgriLife Extension Service and Tarleton State University hosted the 2012 Southwest Dairy Day on Oct. 18 for dairy producers and the general public. The event was held at Tarleton's Southwest Regional Dairy Center in Stephenville, Texas, and included booth vendors, equipment dealers and educational activities, and tours of the fully operational dairy center.

Group-Housed Dairy Calf Systems Symposium scheduled for Dec. 12-13

Back by popular demand, the 2012 Group-Housed Calf Systems Symposium will be held Dec. 12-13, 2012 at the Doubletree Hotel in Syracuse, New York. This innovative conference, organized by the PRO-DAIRY Program at Cornell University, will kick off with an evening session on Dec. 12 designed specifically for those producers who are new to using a group feeding system. The day-long symposium program on Dec. 13 is devoted to understanding the cause of diseases, particularly the effect of environment, and what the impact of changes to that environment through barn ventilation approaches may be.
