Superbowl champ Rocky Bleier to be featured guest at 2013 PA Dairy Summit

Lancaster Dairy Farm Automation is sponsoring a unique highlight to the 2013 PA Dairy Summit – four-time Pittsburgh Steelers Superbowl champion Rocky Bleier will be the featured guest at the evening reception for dairy men and women. “Rocky Bleier's story is about 'fighting back' and overcoming what must have seemed like insurmountable odds to achieve in the career he chose,” said Summit Chair Keith Spicher of Kish-View Farm in Belleville, Pennsylvania. “Every dairy family in the country demonstrates that same determination to succeed in the industry that they are passionate about.”

Hands-on milk quality workshops were a success

More than 120 professionals with a vested interest in milk quality attended the National Mastitis Council regional meeting in Sioux Falls, South Dakota, in August. In addition to networking and knowledge-sharing opportunities, attendees had the opportunity to participate in specialized, interactive short courses. Attendees could choose to attend four of 10 different short courses, including one taught in Spanish. “This was the first year that we offered just short courses at our regional meeting,” says David Reid, NMC first vice president and owner of Rocky Ridge Dairy Consulting.

Council on Dairy Cattle Breeding charts new course

The Council on Dairy Cattle Breeding (CDCB) met in Madison, Wisconsin, Oct. 7-8. Following extensive industry discussion and planning, CDCB is moving forward ensuring the future leadership position for the U.S. dairy industry in genetic evaluations and management benchmarks. Through collaboration within the U.S. dairy industry, CDCB’s plan will uphold the U.S. gold standard in developing and delivering high quality dairy genetics and management tools to dairy producers.

All-American Dairy Show already gearing up for 50th Anniversary

The 49th All-American Dairy Show was held September 15-20. The event features 23 shows in six days with more than 900 exhibitors from across the U.S. and Canada. The show also has a strong focus on youth with the Premier National Junior Events, the nation’s only four-day event for youth at a dairy show. Activities include a showmanship competition, a dairy management contest and dairy judging forum, a dairy judging contest and a junior national show. Organizers of the event are already gearing up to celebrate the show’s 50-year history next year at the Golden Anniversary Jubilee, to be held September 7-12, 2013. PD

DCRC Annual Meeting makes its way West this year

The Dairy Cattle Reproduction Council (DCRC) is gearing up for its annual meeting, which will take place November 8-9 at the Hyatt Regency in Sacramento, California. Because successful reproductive management depends on many areas on the dairy, this year’s meeting will address topics that ultimately impact reproduction, including nutrition, herd management, animal welfare and technology.

Alltech's Global 500: Ruminating on the future of the dairy industry

Alltech’s fifth annual Global 500, Dec. 4-6 in Lexington, Kentucky, will feature industry experts who will address the changing future of the dairy and beef industries. In 2011, more than 700 beef and dairy producers from 32 countries attended. The event is expected to attract more than 1,000 attendees this year.

Silage Day in California

A significant part of most dairies’ total mixed ration, corn silage is a crop that can lose its nutritional potential if not harvested and stored carefully. University of California dairy advisers and specialists, along with veterinarians and nutritionists, presented dairy producers and managers with tools to improve their silage handling at Silage Day in Modesto.

Select Sires offers open house and parade of bulls

For the first time in more than a decade, COBA/Select Sires offered facility tours and a parade of bulls at an open house for customer-owners on August 10 at the Select Sires Inc. headquarters. While the A.I. company has hosted several smaller groups over the years, it has not held an event of this size, with more than 700 attendees, since the 1990s.
