Rotational grazing isn’t a new idea. Nor is the idea of managing native rangelands and the ruminants that graze them in the vein of how the American bison grazed the landscape.

I know just enough about social media to be dangerous. I don’t spend a lot of time online, but I do belong to some forage groups, and I enjoy following some of the questions and debates. Recently, a fertilizer discussion caught my eye.

Baled silage, or baleage, is forage baled at a higher moisture content than dry hay and then stored in sealed plastic wrap. The high moisture level and air-tight environment create favorable conditions for anaerobic fermentation and production of lactic and acetic acids that preserve the forage.

Kelly Garrett, in western Iowa, is the first producer in the U.S. to market carbon credits for a large payment. The credits were determined by the amount of carbon stored in soil on his farm.
