Open Agriculture Data Alliance seeks farm data standardization

The Open Agriculture Data Alliance (OADA) – a group of Purdue University researchers and agricultural companies – recently announced an open source project aimed at standardizing “farm data formats and improve communication between farm equipment and farm management tools made by different companies,” according to a Reuters article by Karl Plume. The group also will seek to set standards on data privacy and security.

DuPont joins collaboration to increase grower productivity, sustainability

DuPont, the University of Missouri (UM) and the USDA-Agricultural Research Service (USDA-ARS) have announced a new collaboration to pool soil mapping resources, predictive technologies and expertise to help growers more sustainably improve crop yields through better nitrogen application management and other field input planning.

Warmer spring weather soon will green up your alfalfa. Before that happens, though, maybe you should do a little weed control.

Weeds like pennycress, downy brome, mustards, cheatgrass, dandelion and shepherd's purse are common in first-cut alfalfa. They lower alfalfa yields, reduce quality, lessen palatability and slow hay drydown. Walk over your fields during the next few weeks once snow is gone, especially in areas where these weeds grew last year. They probably will be there again this spring. You should be able to see their small, green, over-wintering growth.
