How to handle 2014’s compromised crops

February 6, 2015
Karen Lee
The lab results are in – and the diagnosis is a challenging year ahead as crops harvested in 2014 were not quite up to par. At the PDPW Dairy Feed and Nutrition Conference in November, Dr. Mike Hutjens from the University of Illinois shared testing results from Midwest forage laboratories and outlined the steps he’d take to manage feedout.

Just dropping by ... Remember the Holy Days

February 6, 2015
With December 25 and New Year’s out of the way, the shimmer of Christmas is replaced with the crimson flash of Valentine’s Day. February 6, 2015
Loren Block
When looking for farm equipment tires, you have plenty of options … or at least you should. Good tire dealers don’t just try to sell what’s left in stock. Instead, they’ll offer many different brands and types of tires, as well as all the rims, accessories and hardware to go with them, to help you find the one solution that will work best.

The Milk House: Life, unmeasurable

February 6, 2015
Ryan Dennis
My grandfather, Dieter Kramer, had always told me: “Ryan, don’t be drinking the water beer.” Water beer was his term for any domestic lager. It was as fine a metaphor as any other for life.

Reclaiming system saves sand bedding at Rosebrin Farms

February 6, 2015
Alice Guthrie
Rosebrin Farms Ltd., located near Chilliwack, British Columbia, in the beautiful Fraser Valley, is the home of Brad and Lisa Roseboom and their family. Brad’s father established a dairy operation in the area in 1957, and Brad came home to farm in 1984. For a while, he farmed with his brother, but 11 years ago, he and Lisa established Rosebrin as a separate operation. Lisa says this decision was made with their four sons in mind as well as to provide an opportunity for their special-needs daughter, Melissa.

Mining for gold in your silage

February 6, 2015
Lynn Jaynes
Much of the western U.S. is dotted with old gold mining sites. While some of the mines followed veins, much of the gold was actually obtained through placer mining – the process whereby stream-bed gravel is scooped into a round pan and gently swirled or agitated until the gold sinks to the bottom of the pan and the gravel is gently washed over the sides. It was hard work. You had to want it bad.

The View from Here: Past and present

February 6, 2015
Mike Gangwer
We are well into winter here in upstate New York, albeit not as cold as last year. The trees have shed their leaves, which form a deep mat of organic matter on the woodlot floor. The pastures are green in spots, covered with snow in others, and the surface waters are cold and flowing toward New York City reservoirs.
