I’ll share my baler if you share your combine

May 6, 2014
Jennifer Bradley
Crop prices have been good the last few years. This year’s harvest is predicted to take a different direction, however, and the trend of equipment sharing is looking to re-surge. The practice was strong after the recession in 2008 and waned in recent seasons.

Keep the tires turning and your wheels from spinning

May 6, 2014
John Krantz
It’s one of those things that producers sometimes take for granted. After completing daily maintenance and equipment checks before heading to the field, producers just expect tires will keep on turning – all day, the next day and for many days and years to come. And because tire failures happen so seldom, when it does occur, especially in the field and away from the shop, the importance of having a tire dealer you can rely on to help keep the wheels turning is essential.

Feed mixer, silage, spreader trucks: Farm truck evolution

May 6, 2014
Brad Nelson
There is a lot of material to move around on a dairy farm, from feed coming in at harvest to feed and bedding delivered to the end user (the cows) to the removal and spreading of manure – and it all needs wheels under it to move. As the size of a “normal” dairy has increased, more and more dairies need their own fleet of farm trucks.

Equipment considerations when baling corn stover

May 6, 2014
Phil Chrisman
Baling corn stover is a dirty business. Because of that, there are many factors to take into consideration when determining your equipment needs for the job. Durability is key, but there are several other items to keep in mind to help keep things running smoothly and efficiently when it comes to baling corn stover.

Electronic feed monitoring systems: Measure and monitor

May 6, 2014
Don Martell
Current dairy economics result in very tight margins. Feed cost continues to be a dairy’s biggest expense in milk production. A comprehensive and detailed analysis of TMR preparation and delivery often reveals ways to improve milk production while reducing feed shrink, fuel and labor costs. Over the last five years, I’ve conducted many TMR audits. Whenever possible, I use the manager’s own “electronic feed monitoring system” or EFMS.

National Farm Machinery Show

May 6, 2014
Lynn Jaynes
During February, all was quiet at the Churchill Downs racetrack in Louisville, Kentucky. The racetrack was covered with snow with nary a hoofprint in it. But across town at the National Farm Machinery Show, the race for precision agriculture was heating up.

Why, what and when to change your milking system

May 6, 2014
Roger S. Thomson
Editor’s note: This is the first article in a two-part series. In the competitive march toward improved efficiency and profitability, many dairymen have long recognized the high cost of their milking center can best be justified by running it 24 hours a day. At this pace, your parlor is on the clock in excess of 8,500 hours per year.

Limit the damaging effects of flies for young calves

May 6, 2014
David Cook
Hot weather and flies tend to go hand-in-hand, but there are measures you can take to limit fly populations in the summer months. Pre-weaned calves are especially susceptible to the detrimental effects of flies because they often live in confined spaces and cannot escape a fly-infested environment.

Dry period heat stress effects on calf health and metabolism

May 6, 2014
Jim Quigley
Research continues to show that prenatal stress can affect metabolism of the offspring. This appears to hold true for many different species of animals including cattle. One stress that consistently affects pregnant dairy cows is heat stress. We know that heat stress can impair a cow’s reproduction and depress milk production. However, effects on calves – either before or after calving – are less well-defined.

Is cow-calf separation a socially sustainable practice?

May 6, 2014
Beth Ventura
Cow-calf separation is embedded into the rhythm of life on most dairy farms, so much so that many people in the industry may not have thought much about why it’s done, or more pointedly, questioned whether it should be done. But with rising concern over the animal management practices in the dairy industry, we suggest that the dairy industry would benefit by engaging with consumers about this and other contentious practices.
