California producers continue to wait on FMMO

More than 130 dairy producers filled the Double Tree Hotel Ballroom in Modesto, California, on Jan. 17 to be updated on the proposed creation of a Federal Milk Marketing Order (FMMO) in California. Golden State dairy producers were invited to interact with a trio of USDA representatives who traveled to California to gather more information and meet with producers.

The article that describes the app was published in the Jan. 1, 2014 print issue, and the video was featured in the Jan. 27, 2014 Extra e-newsletter. This popular article featured the Milk Quality app, developed by Dairy Quality Inc. The app works with a device that reads milk samples. John Tremelin, a dairy producer from Ontario, was able to use the app to find suspect animals and be able to tag the milk and keep it out of the tank.

California farmers deal with drought emergency amid fires

January 20, 2014
California farmers are still dealing with extreme dry conditions — and it doesn't look like Mother Nature plans to help anytime soon. Gov. Jerry Brown last week declared a drought emergency for the Golden State, saying it's facing perhaps the worst drought in more than 100 years. His remarks, made at his San Francisco office, came as firefighters continued to battle fires in the foothills of Los Angeles County, adding to the stress of an already parched land.

U.S. Dairy Export Council: Another record dairy export year

January 17, 2014
The final numbers won’t be available until February, but one result is already in: The U.S. set a dairy export record in 2013, shipping $6.1 billion worth of product in the first 11 months alone. That’s 17 percent more than the entire year of 2012, and likely to be about 30 percent more, or $6.7 billion total, when the USDA’s Foreign Agricultural Service releases year-end data next month.
