Livestock feed supplement maker to halt comparative claims

A maker of livestock feed supplements says it will halt comparative advertising claims at the recommendation of the National Advertising Division (NAD). The division recommended that Novus International stop advertising the claims following a challenge by Micronutrients. Both challenger and advertiser produce copper trace mineral supplements that are mixed with livestock feed.

Alltech symposium tries to ‘create something different’

To improve on last year’s symposium, Pearse Lyons, founder and president of Alltech, and his team thought of the 2012 symposium as “boring.” “We never review what we did right,” Pearse Lyons said. “Last year’s symposium was fantastic, but we wrote down one word and only one word. We should take the approach that last year’s [symposium] was boring. Start again and create something different.” This year’s symposium was held May 19-22 in Lexington, Kentucky. Nearly 2,400 people attended the event from 72 different countries.

New app aims to help dairymen analyze heat stress levels

A new smartphone app is now available to help dairy producers be aware of the heat and humidity levels their cows are experiencing to better manage heat stress effects. “What’s going on outside isn’t necessarily what the cows are experiencing in the barn,” says Elena Lindemann, marketing director for Purina Animal Nutrition, which developed the app. “A producer can be standing in front of the cows wearing a T-shirt or light sweatshirt, feeling comfortable, while the cows are probably already heat stressed.”

The program planning committee consisted of dairy extension faculty from Iowa, Illinois, Minnesota and Wisconsin, and the intention of the conference was to provide timely research information for dairy industry professionals.
