Study: Federal milk marketing order could benefit California dairy producers

The findings of a five-month study indicate that a properly written federal milk marketing order for California would provide a regulatory structure that would potentially result in higher farm gate prices, according to three milk cooperatives, which in turn would benefit dairy families in the Golden State.

Antibodies in cows suggest new ways to make therapies for humans

A study of an 
extraordinary family of cow antibodies, led by researchers at The Scripps
 Research Institute (TSRI) and coauthored by three investigators from Texas
 A&M College of Veterinary Medicine and Biomedical Sciences (CVM), points 
to new ways to make human medicines. “These antibodies’ structure and
 their mechanism for creating diversity haven’t been seen before in other 
animals’ antibodies,” said Vaughn V. Smider, assistant professor of Cell and
 Molecular Biology at TSRI and principal investigator of the study.

Milk fuels spirited competition at Oregon dairy event

June 18, 2013
Seventy-five people with 49 boats competed in the fifth annual Dairy Farmers of Oregon Milk Carton Boat Race, June 9 at Westmoreland Park Casting Pond. “Many of the boats paid homage to the event with dairy themes including a dairy bus, dairy cows and a ‘lactose tolerant boat’,” said Pete Kent, executive director of the Oregon Dairy Products Commission. “Oregon’s dairy farm families enjoy hosting the boat race and supporting their local community.”

Dairy worker safety and health: Manure pit safety

Storage of cow manure is a common practice on dairy farms. Each additional installation of a manure pit increases the probability that a fatal accident will result. Tragically, experiences in several states indicate that when an accident does occur, it is likely to involve two or three fatalities. Also, there have been several cases of large numbers of livestock perishing due to manure gases.
