MMPA recognizes 35-year members

Twenty-nine Michigan Milk Producers Association (MMPA) members were recognized as 35-year members at the 95th MMPA State Annual Delegate Meeting, March 15. MMPA President Ken Nobis congratulated and praised the members for their dedication to the cooperative. “We commend you for your dedication and loyalty to MMPA and the dairy industry over the last 35 years,” said President Nobis as he awarded each member with a plaque.

Pennsylvania soybean checkoff board awards $57,572 for four research projects

Four soybean research projects designed to provide reliable data to soybean growers and livestock producers who use soymeal have been awarded checkoff grants totaling $57,572 for the coming crop year by the Pennsylvania Soybean Promotion Board. The all-farmer board, which administers the national soybean checkoff program in the commonwealth, took the action in a day-long meeting with researchers in Harrisburg, Pennsylvania in mid-March.

National Mastitis Council celebrates 50 years of milk quality

The 50th Annual Meeting of the National Mastitis Council (NMC), held Jan. 23-26, in Arlington, Virginia, attracted 400 individuals. The event commemorated the organization’s long standing commitment to mastitis control and milk quality and the kick-off to a year-long celebration of NMC’s 50 years. Attendees from all over the world represented various facets of the dairy industry, including dairy producers, veterinarians, researchers, consultants, equipment and pharmaceutical suppliers, dairy plant field staff, extension educators and students.

Milk quality: Who sets the rules?

From the first colonies up through the present, the regulation of food sanitation, especially milk and milk products, has been a state -and local issue. Public health regulations were among the earliest Colonial laws. Early rules dealt primarily with public outbreaks of disease. Regulations on food, including milk, evolved as the percentage of the population self-sufficient in the production of food shrank and the percentage who purchased their food grew.

Bill to reform milk pricing to reflect national cost of production will be revived

Editor’s note: The following news summaries highlight activity by groups that are interested in and working towards dairy reform. Former Specter-Casey Bill to be reintroduced The Progressive Agriculture Organization recently confirmed it is working with other producers to see that a failed dairy reform bill from the previous session of Congress is re-introduced this year. The bill, known then as S1645 or the Specter-Casey Bill, would change how raw milk at the farm level is priced and would make it reflective of a national average cost of production and impose supply management. Arden Tewksbury, manager of the Pennsylvania-based organization, said that Sen. Robert Casey (D-PA) was reviewing the bill and preparing to reintroduce it.
