I belong to... DCHA: Amy Shiplett

March 15, 2011
Age: 34 Location: Chilton, Wisconsin My dairy’s history: My parents owned and operated a 70-cow dairy farm until 1994, when they transitioned to raising replacement heifers. They were one of the first replacement heifer farms in our area. Five years ago, I joined the farm operation and we formed an LLC. I am very proud to be a third-generation farmer, but couldn’t do it without the help of my mom, Gertie, who does all the farm bookwork and my husband, Brent, and our three full-time employees, who help me keep the operation running day-to-day.

Just dropping by... Commandments of order

March 15, 2011
(Click here to listen to a podcast of this column.) The summer sky after a rain is a glorious sight. The stars shimmer in the velvet blackness of infinity and the feeling of loneliness surrounds me as I realize I am only a speck of nothingness in a vast cosmos of other worlds.

Mechanics Corner: All-steel flotation radials: The new frontier in tire technology

March 15, 2011
Michael Aguon
All-steel radial flotation tires represent a new frontier in flotation tire technology – a tire designed to meet the demands of heavier equipment, heavier loads and longer hauls over paved roads while still minimizing soil compaction in the field. The first all-steel flotation radial tire on the market is also the industry’s first farm flotation tire of its size to meet DOT certification requirements.

Milk fatty acids: Can we monitor rumen function?

March 15, 2011
Ed DePeters
In a recent article with Brian Tully, we talked about milk fatty acids and how they relate to feed bunk management – “empty bunk syndrome.” But what was our theory behind using milk fatty acids as a monitor of rumen metabolism? This is an example of serendipity; research can have unexpected spin-offs. How did serendipity play a role in our understanding of how it impacts milk fat synthesis in dairy cows?

Corn silage processing and fecal starch: More to the story?

March 15, 2011
Jon Urness
We’ve all heard it said, “The proof is in the pudding.” However, the pudding we’re talking about in this article is no dessert fare. It’s actually the final byproduct of rumen and lower tract digestion. And while the absolute proof may not lie in the pudding, it certainly carries some strong evidence regarding starch digestibility.

Generator helps keep cows cool and milk flowing at dairy

March 15, 2011
Keith Burg
West River Dairy, one of several dairy farms managed by Riverview LLP, houses 6,400 cows in the countryside near the rural community of Morris in western Minnesota. Built in 2004, West River originally relied on a “naturally vented” barn system, in which curtains along the walls could be rolled up to let air through the barn. With fan technology becoming more common in agricultural settings, however, Riverview recently installed a cross-ventilation fan system at its West River facility to pull air through the barns and milking parlor as needed.

Don’t give up your eyesight

March 15, 2011
Dean Ross
One of the most common injuries in the workplace is an eye injury. It is estimated that over 2,000 people in the U.S. injure their eyes at work each day. The majority of these injuries result from small particles or slivers impacting or abrading the eye (See http://www.cdc.gov/niosh/topics/eye/). Of these injuries, 90 percent could have been reduced in severity or avoided altogether through the use of proper eye protection (Also see http://www.preventblindness.org/safety/worksafe.html).

The View from Here: The first month in Pakistan

March 15, 2011
Mike Gangwer
During my first month here in Pakistan, I have drawn certain conclusions about agricultural development. In this article I write about one of them, and make the case that one of our greatest attributes in the U.S. is the Land Grant University Extension System (LGUES).
