Southwest summer dairy program undergoes expansion

July 15, 2010
During recent years, many universities in the Southwest started closing their dairy herds, a fact that sparked a definite need for a program focused on educating students interested in pursuing careers in advanced large-herd dairy management. The Southern Great Plains Dairy Consortium (SGPDC), based out of Texas A&M University in College Station, Texas, and hosted by Clovis Community College in Clovis, New Mexico, was designed with that mission. The program has rapidly grown in student participation since its inception in the summer of 2008.

Several dairy producers from the Magic Valley area of Idaho attended the annual rafting trip July 8-10 in Salmon, Idaho. Jami Gaver, owner of Rocky Mountain Pharmaceuticals, hosted the event at his home in Salmon. Carl Billhimer, a sales representative for Novartis Animal Health, sponsored the event on behalf of the company.

Cheese production from Jersey milk conserves resources and reduces environmental impact

With more than 40 percent of U.S. milk production utilized in the manufacture of cheese, using nutrient-dense milk produced by smaller Jersey cattle produces substantial reductions in water and land usage, fuel consumption, waste output and greenhouse gas emissions compared to using Holstein milk.

Cow Camp provides youth three days of dairy activities

Cal Poly in San Luis Obispo, California, hosted 55 dairy enthusaists for Cow Camp. The three-day event, which began July 8, was sponsored by the California Junior Holstein Association. With the help of Dr. Stan Henderson, Mr. Rich Silacci and California Holstein Secretary Kate Briggs, educational focus was on the sales and promotion end of the Holstein industry.
