This is my final article from Iraq. My 16-month tour is over. I have traveled about 40 percent of my time here, reaching every province but one. I have worked with nearly two dozen USDA ag advisers in the field and several of them here in Baghdad.
Horizon Organic announced four student recipients of 2010 Horizon Organic Producer Education (HOPE) program scholarships. Each recipient will receive $2,500 towards their education, encouraging them to enter the field of organic agriculture. Horizon Organic is the first and only national organic dairy brand to have a scholarship program designed to build the next generation of organic dairy leaders.
DeLaval announced it has hit the 30,000 sales mark for its swinging cow brush, a self-grooming device that keeps cows happier, healthier and more productive. “The swinging cow brush is very popular among dairy farmers thanks to its many customer benefits. Definitely a DeLaval success story,” DeLaval Vice President Business Area Aftermarket & Services Tim Nicolaï said.
During recent years, many universities in the Southwest started closing their dairy herds, a fact that sparked a definite need for a program focused on educating students interested in pursuing careers in advanced large-herd dairy management.
The Southern Great Plains Dairy Consortium (SGPDC), based out of Texas A&M University in College Station, Texas, and hosted by Clovis Community College in Clovis, New Mexico, was designed with that mission. The program has rapidly grown in student participation since its inception in the summer of 2008.
Several dairy producers from the Magic Valley area of Idaho attended the annual rafting trip July 8-10 in Salmon, Idaho.
Jami Gaver, owner of Rocky Mountain Pharmaceuticals, hosted the event at his home in Salmon. Carl Billhimer, a sales representative for Novartis Animal Health, sponsored the event on behalf of the company.
With more than 40 percent of U.S. milk production utilized in the manufacture of cheese, using nutrient-dense milk produced by smaller Jersey cattle produces substantial reductions in water and land usage, fuel consumption, waste output and greenhouse gas emissions compared to using Holstein milk.
Cal Poly in San Luis Obispo, California, hosted 55 dairy enthusaists for Cow Camp. The three-day event, which began July 8, was sponsored by the California Junior Holstein Association. With the help of Dr. Stan Henderson, Mr. Rich Silacci and California Holstein Secretary Kate Briggs, educational focus was on the sales and promotion end of the Holstein industry.

I was born on a small farm in Southwick, Massachusetts, where we have raised some beef, but mostly Spotted Draft Horses. My parents own an auction company so we travel around New England and New York, conducting farm dispersals. My grandparents own Laurelbrook Farm in East Canaan, Connecticut, and milk upward of 850 head of Holsteins.
Manure Happens was a field day held on June 25, 2010 at Mains Dairy in Cumberland County, Pennsylvania. This event was all about using nature’s free fertilizer responsibly. Approximately 100 people were in attendance including the speakers and industry sponsors. The day began with a presentation by Dr. Doug Beegle of the Pennsylvania State University.
