June 12, 2018
Dave Natzke
With the approval of the California Federal Milk Marketing Order (FMMO) confirmed, USDA’s Agricultural Marketing Service (AMS) is targeting an October 2018 implementation date. Meanwhile, opposition to a proposal to convert Appalachian and Southeast FMMOs to multiple component pricing (MCP) systems has surfaced.

Exceed expectations with a power statement

June 11, 2018
Walt Cooley
I just finished a spring season of Little League Baseball as assistant coach of my son’s team. Our coach often repeated his goal for us as coaches and players: have a great attitude and give an exceptional effort. We had a young team and were inexperienced; the season was a development year for most of our players.

June 11, 2018
John Harrison
Editor’s note: In early April, Progressive Dairyman reported on a request by National All-Jersey, 14 dairy cooperatives and others asking the USDA to hold a hearing to consider a proposal to implement multiple component pricing (MCP) in two additional Federal Milk Marketing Orders.

June 11, 2018
Jeffrey Bewley
It seems like every month there’s a new precision dairy monitoring technology introduced to the dairy market. Each introduction coincides with a lot of hype about how this new technology is going to change the dairy industry, with articles in mainstream media about how these new “Fitbits for cows” can be used to identify sick cows and cows in heat.

Strive for continuous improvement with ‘lean’ farming practices

June 11, 2018
Bev Berens

The love-hate relationship of VCPRs

June 11, 2018
Angela Daniels
As a veterinarian, one of the things I dreaded (besides more paperwork) when the Veterinary Feed Directive (VFD) came about was hearing producers say, “This is just an excuse for vets to charge me more money.”

Dead on arrival: The dreaded news

June 11, 2018
Andrew L. Skidmore
The 2014 National Animal Health Monitoring System (NAHMS) dairy report shows that on average, 5.6 percent of all full-term pregnancies terminate in a dead calf. Dead on arrival (DOA) or stillborn calves are defined as being full-term but not surviving beyond 48 hours after birth. This average indicates there is a lot of room for improvement in the dairy industry.
