Mac Pate named 2011 Tennessee Farmer of the Year

July 20, 2011
Dairy farmer Mac Pate of Maryville, Tennessee, is 85 years young. Though he has slowed down some in recent years, he still has the drive and energy that helped him develop and maintain an outstanding dairy farm. As a result of his long success as a dairy farmer, Pate has been selected as the 2011 Tennessee winner of the Swisher Sweets/Sunbelt Expo Southeastern Farmer of the Year award. Pate now joins eight other state winners from the Southeast as finalists for the award. The overall winner will be announced on Tuesday, Oct. 18, at the Sunbelt Ag Expo farm show in Moultrie, Georgia. Milk production is excellent, now at about 27,000 pounds of milk per cow per year, down a bit from a peak of 29,000 pounds. At the peak, his 200 cows produced 5.8 million pounds per year. “For two months, our cows produced more than 100 pounds of milk per cow per day,” he adds.

Batten down the hatches against ‘freak’ waves

July 20, 2011
Ben Yale
The Cunard Line’s Queen Elizabeth II, like all cruise ships, is an entertainment venue on the high seas. Center stage for the QE II is the Grand Lounge, a two-story room with a stage at one end. Passengers enjoy the evening entertainment or nightly dance 65 feet above the waterline. On September 11, 1995, a different show occurred in the room. As the ship crossed rough Atlantic seas, a wave hit the windows of the Grand Lounge, crushing them. Less than a quarter of an hour later, Captain R.W. Warwick saw what he later described as the “white cliffs of Dover” straight ahead of the ship.

Your biggest opportunity (or threat)

July 20, 2011
Tom Wall
Chances are, you attended at least one seminar this past year where one of the speakers gave advice on how to improve your business management skills. It always seems that these “experts” essentially say the same thing ... analyze this, analyze that; do this, don’t do that. And although many times we don’t actually implement all of this “common sense” advice, the truth is they’re usually right. And at the risk of trying to impersonate someone who professes to know what he’s talking about, when was the last time you did a SWOT analysis of your business? Basically, what are your Strengths, Weaknesses, Opportunities and Threats?

Profit margin outlook strong through end of 2011

July 20, 2011
Chip Whalen
Dairy producers have continued to see favorable profit margins since the end of the first quarter. While feed costs have been climbing, this has been more than offset by higher milk prices so that the overall profit margin has held steady and even managed to improve through the second quarter of 2011 (see chart at right). This certainly is a welcome development as dairymen struggle to build back lost equity over the past few years in what has been a brutal period of negative margins for the industry.

Is it a pet peeve, costing you money or costing everyone?

July 20, 2011
Harley Wagenseller
Often in our dairy lives we meet with different situations that you can label either irritating or costly. Some of these irritations (pet peeves) can be from either family members or employees. But beyond being annoying, are some of these issues even costly? Let’s examine a few of these areas to see whether we should tolerate some pet peeves or not. At times we all get a “brain cramp” and do something rather stupid, inconsiderate or neglectful of protocols or common sense.

Reader comments regarding the legalization of raw milk

July 20, 2011
Here are some comments Progressive Dairyman has received regarding the raw milk poll. Yes: We need to be honest with consumers and tell them we as dairymen produce the very best product for humans, as well as bacteria. Sure, pasteurization kills bacteria, but so does old age. I have had enough of academia telling the story of raw milk is dangerous. With the right protocols, I’ll put my milk up against anyone’s, so put your milk where your mouth is. Either raw or pasteurized. Duncan Smith Mountain Grove, Missouri No: I was raised drinking raw milk from my family’s own cow, and I love it. However, when you buy milk from an unknown source, you do not have knowledge of how the cow or milk product was handled. Pasteurization laws came about because of diseases that were passed from cow milk to humans. I would love to trust and believe that all human producers of raw milk took proper care of the cow and her product, but alas … this is not to be. Therefore, I would have to vote “No” to the unlimited sale of raw milk without some kind of safeguards. Sue Bell
