For the first time in more than four years, Canadian beef can now be sold and marketed in China.

There is not much in the world prettier than the cold morning sun hitting untouched snow. I’m not much of a skier or snowmobiler, but the sheer beauty of the glitter of a million diamonds under a late sunrise is impossible to deny, even for the most begrudging of winter enthusiasts.

On Dec. 4, the FDA conditionally approved Exzolt Cattle-CA1 (fluralener), a topical solution to prevent and treat infestations of New World screwworm (NWS) larvae and cattle fever tick. The drug is approved for use in beef cattle 2 months old and older and dairy heifers younger than 20 months.

On Oct. 23, the Canadian Cattle Association called for the federal government to terminate the trade deal known as the Canada-U.K. Continuity Agreement, which has been in place since the United Kingdom’s departure from the European Union in January 2020. The organization says reestablishing meaningful trade with between Canada and the U.K. requires ending the current agreement and restarting bilateral negotiations.

Doug Lathem and Chad Schoonover weren’t trying to prove any kind of point when they made the decision to convert their farming and beef cattle operation near Dalhart, in the Texas Panhandle, to organic production. But when they sat down and took a good, long look at their resources, operating costs and market, it became clear: If they wanted to give the next generation a shot at coming back and making a living on the place, the conventional route wasn’t going to cut it.
