Milk can make you grow

November 20, 2019
In myth and legend, there is no other food that compares to the respect given to milk. Milk was known to the ancients as the “food of the gods,” the premier source of power and strength. The heroes in myths and legend were raised on milk and through it gained superhuman abilities.

Farmers, keep an eye out for seasonal depression

November 18, 2019
Brittany Olson
With the shorter days and darker mornings, I’ve had a harder time getting out of bed to go tackle the day and all it promises to bring. Despite making tweaks to my calf feeding schedule to do as little in the dark as possible, it feels like all I do this time of year is work in the dark.

November 12, 2019
Maria Woldt
There are so many cool tech gadgets that are perfect on the farm, from wearables like smart watches to smart home devices for the home or office. But then there are tech gadgets that don’t get the honors they deserve. Here are six of my favorites.

HERd Management: How I became a dairy goal digger

November 6, 2019
Amber McComish
Being a goal-oriented person has never been a “thing” I would normally associate myself with. This was something I acquired recently in my life. I am a full-time farmer, a mother and a part-time gelato maker.

Instead of complaining, do something about it

November 4, 2019
Ashley Messing-Kennedy

I accidentally found some things I’m genuinely passionate about. I also discovered I cannot do it all. This led to my 2018 resolution – saying no to things that don’t bring me joy and passion.

Red team: Would you make the cut?

November 4, 2019
Rebecca Shaw Pfeffer
Editor’s note: This is the fourth in a series of blogs Rebecca Shaw is providing about female entrepreneurs and what the dairy industry can learn from them. This summer, I fan-girled over Carey “The Vixen” Lohrenz, the first female F-14 Tomcat fighter pilot in the U.S. Navy and her concept of a red team. Emily Yeiser Stepp, senior director of the FARM Program, and I dove into what exactly is a red team, why you should have one and when it would be applicable. I’d recommend you read that first.

My husband and I held our own couple’s retreat and lived to tell about it

October 23, 2019
Amy Throndsen
When was the last time you sat down with your spouse without the TV on, without notifications on the phone buzzing nearby, with the kids in bed (or not home at all) and talked about any of the following:

How I’m getting a second wind for advocating

October 23, 2019
Krista Stauffer
I was sitting there in the doctor’s office as the nurse went down a list of questions for my son’s checkup. I was doing my best to listen to the questions, but I had also been sick all morning, so I was partially zoning. My answers were pretty much all the same as my son is very fortunate to not have any allergies, nor does he take any medications. Then she asked if he ate a lot of dairy, to which he quickly told her that he does. She proceeded to tell us that dairy causes behavioral problems in children. He looked at her like she was stupid and gave me a look like “Who is this lady?”

HERd Management: The gift of volunteering

October 18, 2019
Christine Bender
As dairy farmers, I know we wear many hats, not just on the farm but off the farm as well. So why is it every time someone asks us to do something, we immediately volunteer?
