Pat Barry Sales Member Calibrate Technologies Syracuse, New York
What are your new responsibilities?
My role is to introduce the Calibrate service to the northeast dairy market. Calibrate Technologies is a patented feed ingredient analysis program that provides insights into ruminal starch and fiber digestibility in dairy rations. These digestibility insights allow producers, nutritionists and farm management teams to make better decisions and improve overall ration management to better meet the goals of each individual dairy operation.
What territory will you cover?
My primary target is the Northeast U.S. area focusing on the states of New York, Pennsylvania and Vermont.
Please describe your agricultural background.
Raised by an electrician father and a school nurse mother with three energetic brothers, we all were highly encouraged to start working on local dairy farms at an early age. I enjoyed the experience and followed my desire to work in the industry by graduating from Cornell University. I have held many sales and management positions with several agricultural companies, most notably Agway, Ralston Purina, Cargill and Shur-Gain. I have always been employed and involved with the New York dairy market.
What education are you bringing with you to this position?
I received an associate degree in applied science degree from Morrisville State College (1984) and a Bachelor of Science in animal science from Cornell University (1986).
What previous positions have you held?
I have been a location manager, salesman, region manager and have had technical support and training roles throughout my career.
Why did you choose this company?
With a long history of commitment to the agricultural industry, Calibrate Technologies incorporates this commitment with intensive research, investment in people, and a strong desire to help the dairy producers of this world provide “nature’s perfect food” more efficiently and profitably. These attributes as a company are what excited me to become a member of their team.
What goals would you like to accomplish while in this position?
My initial goal is to make sure each dairy producer and nutritionist in the northeast is aware of the company. Once a dairy management team is introduced to it, it is my goal to help them to implement the program allowing for a more efficient herd, while maintaining its health and improving its profit potential. Thus, allowing the producer to have greater resources to enable them to fulfill their personal and professional goals.
How will you be of most help to producers in your region or area of expertise?
The company allows for a faster, more forward-thinking way to manage feeds. By better evaluating the way starch and fiber are utilized in the rumen, we can increase efficiencies and profit potential while decreasing the chances of an unhealthy rumen environment and associated problems.
Who has made the biggest impact on your career?
While I have had the privilege to be around many dynamic and progressive people in the dairy industry, my biggest influence continues to be my father. He started his career as a journeymen electrician and due to his commitment and passion for the industry, progressed through the ranks eventually becoming the northeast director for the National Electrical Contractors Association.
While taking on many additional responsibilities during his career, this commitment, enthusiasm and concern for both the men and women in the trenches, and the contractors and managers of the companies employing these folks, actually increased as his responsibilities increased. His direction and passion taught many how to be effective managers and strong leaders while never disassociating themselves from the workforce and the customer. I was fortunate to be one of those whom he taught and mentored. PD
