A team is a group of people with different skills who perform different tasks and work together toward a common goal. All dairy workers, regardless of their roles in the farm, are team members. However, just being part of a team is not the same as working as a team player. You must be intentional about adopting the mindset of a team player; these are some of a team player’s characteristics.

Positive attitude

A positive attitude is an essential ingredient for success at work and in life. Positivity increases your ability to think creatively, to progress, to cope with challenges, to work with others and leads to more engaged and productive teams. Don’t be the complainer, delayer or excuse-giver; at some point people may start to avoid you. Attitude is contagious, whether it is positive or negative. Choose to focus on the good things.

Good communication

When talking to others, be clear and specific, use simple language, have positive body language and verify the other person understood what you said. When listening, don’t let barriers interfere with communication. For example, stereotyping (based on culture, age, nationality, gender, etc.), assuming (hearing what we expected or want to hear) or having emotional responses don’t let you get the correct message.

Respect

Everyone is unique and distinct. Embrace diversity and treat co-workers with respect. Remember that not everyone operates in the same ways or excels in the same areas. Every single person has unique talents and brings their own experiences and ideas to the table. Working well with a variety of personalities can be challenging; however, understanding how each of your colleagues works best can make you a better team player. How are your interactions with others? Are you treating everyone with respect, courtesy and kindness?

Dedicated

Be the best you can be at your job and confident in your ability to contribute to the team. Put the team’s interests above your own and minimize individualistic behavior. Effective teamwork starts with trust; therefore do your part on building trust. Little things like punctuality help demonstrate that you are reliable and accountable. If you say you’re going to do something, do it and do it well. If you want to establish yourself as trustworthy, follow through on what you say you’ll do. Be accountable and dedicated.

Adaptable

The best team players know how to be flexible and adapt quickly to changes, taking them as a new opportunity for growth. Your willingness to remain positive in a constantly changing environment is an important skill.

Continuous learning

Develop and improve your skills and knowledge continuously. Every team wants team members who want to learn and take on more responsibility. Focus on strengths, not weaknesses; each one of us have something valuable to offer. Do you know what you are good at? What are your strengths? How often do you use them?

Teamwork isn’t always easy, but by developing these qualities and a mindset of a team player, it can lead to a more engaged and productive workplace, and enhance healthy interaction among your peers. Now, before starting to think how others can adopt these characteristics, take a moment and critically evaluate your own behavior. Can you influence others to improve their behavior by role-modeling and applying the qualities of a good team player yourself?  end mark
