The U.S. cattle industry has seen many shifts in the popularity of certain breeds over the decades, from the rise and recession of the Longhorn breed to Herefords and to today's current craze for black-hided cattle, leading to the rise in popularity of breeds like Angus.

With so many breeds to choose from and so little time, Progressive Cattle asked readers in an online poll to share the predominant breed in their herd.

The largest group – just over a third of respondents (37.8%) answered that Angus genetics are the primary base for their herds.

The second-largest group – 20% – answered that Simmental was their predominant breed, with Hereford and Red Angus following with 11.6% and 10.7%, respectively.

Forty-five respondents comprised the remaining 20% of the vote – the "Other" category, with breeds including Charolais, Beefmaster, Gelbvieh, Akaushi and even *gasp* Holstein and Jersey.
