Where our grandparents were milking by hand, we now have the ability to choose between a variety of milking methods – from tiestall setting, to parlour milking and, as of more recently, robotic milking.

This spring, nine farmers graduated from the Dairy Herdsperson Apprenticeship Program at the University of Guelph, Kemptville campus.
The apprentices spent the past two years working on a farm while going to school for four full days each month during the fall and winter.

The Canadian Dairy XPO (CDX), a new large-scale dairy event and a first ever for Canada, will mix dairy agribusiness, breed associations and the research community under one huge roof with dairy producers and global industry stakeholders.

“There’s a huge talent pool that agriculture needs to pay attention to” quips BDO’s Jim Synder as we visit on the plane. Jim leads the agriculture component of a Canada-wide accounting firm and has experience with chartered banks as well.
He spent a lot of time on the road last year at seminars with Leona Dargis, an Albertan ag producer and Canada’s youngest Nuffield scholar, who is under 30 and running a large operation with her sisters and their spouses.
