Sometimes we all inherit the consequences of decisions in which we had no input. We recently took over management of a ranch, and this calving season we are subject to the consequences of breeding decisions that were made before our arrival.

Beef genetics have come a long way in recent years. In the commercial cow/calf sector, one of the biggest decisions producers make is whether or not to include a new breed in their crossbreeding program. Angus? Brahman? Charolais? The options are practically endless. 

The Public Lands Council (PLC) and National Cattlemen’s Beef Association (NCBA) denounced March 31 the Bureau of Land Management’s (BLM) proposed decision on the American Prairie Reserve’s (APR) request to graze bison on seven grazing allotments in Montana.

Declining beef and pork production may offset increased broiler production and lead to a decrease in total meat production in 2022.
