July 21, 2011
SIOUX FALLS, South Dakota–Between 1,000 and 1,500 head of cattle have died across South Dakota from excessive heat and humidity, and those numbers will likely climb as more reports come in, state officials said Tuesday. State Veterinarian Dustin Oedekoven said his office was still compiling numbers, but reporting is not mandatory and many people dealing with cattle losses likely haven't had time to check in.

Livestock producers are culling into the 'hearts of herds'

July 20, 2011
COLLEGE STATION — Faced with lack of grazing, dwindling hay supplies and shrinking surface water sources, livestock producers continue to cull deeper into herds, according to Texas AgriLife Extension Service reports. “They’re culling a lot deeper than they normally would, and they’re culling a lot harder than they normally would,” said Rick Hirsch, AgriLife Extension agent for Henderson, west of Tyler. “And they’re culling into the heart of their herds.” By “heart of their herds,” Hirsch meant heifers and three- to six-year-old cows that should form the core of future production.

How much risk to the corn crop?

July 19, 2011
A number of factors combine each year to determine the U.S. average corn yield.  Among those factors, temperature and precipitation during July are the most important.  Crop yield models have long confirmed the large yield impact of July weather.  The most favorable weather conditions in July in the heart of the corn belt consist of temperatures that are modestly below average and precipitation that is about 25 percent above average.  These are the kind of conditions that were experienced in 2009 and contributed to the record high U.S. average yield that year.  Historically, such conditions over large areas have been rare.
