On Aug. 21, USDA-NASS released the semi-annual United States and Canadian Cattle report, which reported July 1, 2012 along with 2007-2011 cattle numbers by class for each country. Twenty years ago, when the National Beef Quality Audit began, the area most in need of improvement was with the product itself. What customers were buying didn’t always equate to a pleasurable dining experience.
Two decades later, those culinary targets are being met more favorably. And as far as the beef audit is concerned, those criteria remain a priority, along with other areas such as food safety, sustainable and ethical production, genetic quality and size of cattle.
The Indonesian government has confirmed Australian cattle industry fears in announcing that only 98,000 head of cattle will be imported from Australia for the remaining six months of 2012.
That action takes the total number of live cattle imports to 283,000 for this year, down from 410,000 last year.
Import permits were initially issued at an even 125,000 per quarter last year – but this year only 60,000 import permits were issued in the first quarter and 125,000 for the second six months of the year.
