The weather forecast for today is hot and cold: Tips for nurturing calves in fluctuating weather

While pretty much no one likes it when the weather turns bipolar, calves find it especially challenging. Whether the calf is facing heat or cold, minimizing stressors is essential to maximizing calf performance.
September 2, 2024
Sarah Eck

Have you ever found yourself begging Mother Nature to give you a break? For example, this past winter, Wisconsin experienced several 50-degree temperature swings in one day. It was nice and sunny one day, and then 12 hours later, chilly and damp. Those fluctuations can make calves more vulnerable to scours and respiratory illnesses.

Preweaned calves, technology and long-term profitability

While raising calves as cheaply as possible may have been a past goal, research shows that raising calves for maximum performance is more productive. Modern technology can play a big role in achieving this through timely information and more efficient management.
August 27, 2024
Robert James

Until recently, raising all heifer calves to breeding age or calving and selling them was not profitable. Using the concept of genomics, lower-ranking females in the herd have been bred to beef sires, resulting in a new profit center for many farms. Finally, we are learning to appreciate that the better we raise our heifer calves, the healthier they are, and they produce more milk during their first and later lactations.

Winning the pathogen challenge: A game plan devised by experts

While it might be one of the most common diseases, the cause of scours isn’t always easy to ascertain. Three experts share insight on devising a plan to help pinpoint the issue.
August 19, 2024
Dale Miller

I occasionally get calls from customers and other producers about product features or lab samples where the results come back without a clear solution to the challenge. Some wonder why they even saw a scours outbreak and sick calves because they were doing a great job managing the calf environment and being diligent with their prevention program. It’s understandably frustrating for them, and they want answers.

Vaccine timing: Let your past guide your future

Knowing which calves are at greatest risk for disease and being able to identify the specific causative agent of disease is essential for developing appropriate vaccine and treatment protocols.
August 14, 2024
Jason Shumaker

Vaccine protocol discussions can be energetic and entertaining amongst calf raisers, consultants and veterinarians. It ultimately leads to comparing the current vaccine protocol to a large, well-established calf raiser in the region or even nationally. There can be value in this comparison, but the real value is understanding how these successful facilities arrived at their protocol.

4 tips to foster a positive impact on calf stress

Preventative measures like good nutrition, handling practices, calf comfort and observation protocols are key for keeping calves healthy while they're stressed.
July 17, 2024
Curt Vlietstra

When calves face stress, it often threatens their respiratory health. Mitigating risk, including stress management, is a key component of a larger bovine respiratory disease (BRD) battle plan, which also includes building immunity and managing infection.

Sick calves: Where did I trip up?

While calves are born healthy, human management can greatly affect their health for better or worse. Creating SOPs that are readable, in the correct language and readily available is key to minimizing the number of errors that occur daily.
July 3, 2024
Courtney Carter

I graduated college thinking I had learned everything I would need to know to be successful in a career in animal science. My first job as a calf-raising manager on a large calf ranch showed me that was far from the truth. I’m not saying college didn’t prepare me. It’s that I never would have expected to fail as much as I did.

Pathways to profitability with heifer inventory management

July 1, 2024
Peter Dueppengiesser

With current milk prices, dairy farmers are trying to lower costs, while optimizing their return opportunities. With the average cost of raising a dairy replacement heifer at over $2,500, according to a 2019 Cornell Cooperative Extension survey, heifer inventory management and raising the right replacements is a critical part of that plan.
