Producer comments: Blame the government for encouraging the growth of dairies

November 21, 2011
Note: The following are opinion commentaries. I am responding to your question of whether or not I favor Foundation for the Future (FFTF). I am a seventh-generation dairy farmer owning and operating a closed herd of 60 registered Holsteins in Lancaster County, Pennsylvania. (Visit www.ebyfarm.com for more information.) Many blame co-ops; others blame corporate dairies for the mess we are in. Yes, they are part of the problem, but more importantly they are the result of a much bigger problem.

November 21, 2011
The National Milk Producers Federation’s (NMPF) Board of Directors elected several new officers at the organization’s 2011 annual meeting in San Diego, California. Randy Mooney, from Rogersville, Missouri, representing Dairy Farmers of America, was re-elected as the organization’s chairman, a position he has held since 2008. Ken Nobis, from St. John, Michigan, representing Michigan Milk Producers Association, was elected first vice chairman. Nobis had been serving as NMPF treasurer.

Update: Dairy Security Act of 2011

November 21, 2011
Principal designer of DMSP drops its support of Dairy Security Act In a letter to co-op members in October, Agri-Mark publicly announced its opposition to pending dairy reform legislation known as the Dairy Security Act of 2011, introduced into the house by Rep. Collin Peterson and co-sponsored by eight other House members. The co-op renounced its previous support of NMPF’s Foundation for the Future, which was the basis for Peterson’s bill, because the current legislation does not require mandatory participation in supply management during low profit margins by all U.S. dairy farmers.

About 300 activists representing the animal rights, environmental and public health movements converged in Arlington, Virginia, on Oct. 27-29 for the first-ever “Conference to End Factory Farming”. Industry must address fluid milk sales

November 18, 2011
Tom Gallagher
A recent Progressive Dairyman article on fluid milk sales contains several important points that all dairymen should understand. Click here to read Kaczor's article "Fluid milk sales head for 25-year low: Is anyone watching?" in the October 12th issue of Progressive Dairyman. I’d like to add several thoughts to the conversation. Milk sales analysis usually includes a statement to the effect that other beverages have “stolen our share” of stomach. The reality is, no one stole our share of stomach – we, as an industry, gave it away. Experience shows, again and again, if we give consumers what they want, where and how they want it, milk sales will increase.

Where did my El Lechero go?

November 18, 2011
Dario Martinez
Beginning with our most recent edition of El Lechero we have changed our circulation policy, shifting it to being a request-only publication. We feel it is more beneficial to have our magazine reach those that are actively reading this publication and making the most of the materials we present. El Lechero will continue to be provided to you at no cost, if you have requested the magazine. If you were expecting to receive El Lechero and you didn’t, that most likely means that you have not previously requested your own copy of the magazine.

El Lechero provides a switch in attitude in South Dakota

November 18, 2011
When Hispanic dairy workers in South Dakota saw veterinarian Corale Dorn coming, they thought they were in trouble for doing something wrong, but this was before Dorn started using El Lechero. One of the unique characteristics of the magazine, Dorn says, is its bilingual articles. This, she says, aids dairy and vet employees with vocabulary building.
