Developers rush to harvest sun on prime California ag land

November 8, 2011
Don't call a photovoltaic power station a "solar farm" in front of Chris Scheuring. "We all do a little spin, but calling it a 'crop' is like bad poetry in a sophomore English class," says the California Farm Bureau attorney. "I should know what a crop is, and it doesn't fit my definition of a crop." The question of when a farm is a farm is coming up often these days in California's agricultural heartland, where the sunny days and wide open spaces that make it America's most productive ag land are proving an irresistible mix to developers seeking to get in on the U.S. push for renewable energy.

Hearing examiner: Milk fresh beyond sell-by date

November 8, 2011
The state Board of Livestock should scrap its rule requiring milk to be sold within 12 days of being pasteurized and let processors set their own dates, a hearing examiner recommended. "The 12-day rule should be repealed and in its place a rule should be adopted allowing milk processors to set appropriate code dates based on the testing they perform to determine the freshness, palatability, taste, odor and safety of the milk they produce," Helena attorney John Sullivan wrote in his Oct. 27 proposal.

John Deere to build full-size sculpture of combine with over 300,000 cans of food

November 8, 2011
To recognize the vital role that America’s farmers play in feeding the world this harvest season, John Deere is attempting a world-record at constructing a full-sized sculpture of its new S-Series combine from more than 300,000 cans of food at the John Deere Pavilion in downtown Moline, Illinois. According to Nicole Schneider, project manager, communications for John Deere Ag & Turf Division, the John Deere Project ”Can Do” combine sculpture and food donation program are designed to raise awareness of the essential role farmers and ranchers play in producing safe, healthy and abundant food for a growing world population, while supplying much needed food supplies to a local food bank during the holiday season.

Executives of major exporting companies object to dairy supply control

November 7, 2011
Top executives of six of the country's biggest dairy exporters strongly object to the Dairy Security Act of 2011. In a letter sent to members of the Joint Select Committee on Deficit Reduction, they outlined the negative effects the act would have on domestic and global dairy markets and said it has no place in deficit-reduction talks. It is expected that the dairy program will be part of the recommendations submitted by House and Senate Agriculture Committee leaders to the supercommittee for inclusion in the debt-reduction bill.
