Gunderson selected for national AFIA appointment

Alan Gunderson was recently named chairman-elect of the American Feed Industry Association (AFIA). The organization is the world’s largest trade group devoted exclusively to representing the business, legislative and regulatory interests of the U.S. animal feed industry and its suppliers. Gunderson, who serves on the executive committee, will assume the top role starting in May 2012.

MMI International raises more than $44,000 to benefit The Eppley Cancer Center

MMI International announced a corporate donation to the Cattlemen’s Ball of Nebraska. This donation benefits The Eppley Cancer Center at the University of Nebraska Medical Center. Each year the proceeds from the Cattlemen’s Ball of Nebraska go to The Eppley Cancer Center at the University of Nebraska Medical Center and other Nebraska healthcare organizations.

Debate continues on supply control

Foundation for the Future magazine published,website updates unveiled NMPF recently published the Foundation for the Future magazine, a 20-page publication that provides an explanation of the proposed dairy policy reform programs from dairy producers’ perspectives, along with independent expert analyses. The magazine is available as a downloadable PDF on www.futurefordairy.com. In addition, NMPF updated the Foundation for the Future website to accommodate details about the Summer Grassroots Tour. Other updates include improved accessibility of program details, the addition of producer testimonials, and the option to sign up as an official supporter.

PETA clarification

In the May 21, 2011 issue of Progressive Dairyman, we published an interview with Amber Driscoll, corporate liaison for PETA. The intent of the article was to create industry awareness of the new dairy care standards PETA developed. It was not meant in form to declare an endorsement by Progressive Dairyman, Progressive Publishing and its publishers and employees. Since publishing the article, we’ve been asked to clarify this statement made by Driscoll: “PETA developed these standards with input from animal welfare experts Dr. Temple Grandin and Dr. Mohan Raj, and incorporated recommendations made by the dairy industry itself, including the National Milk Producers Federation (NMPF) and the American Association of Bovine Practitioners (AABP).”

A look ahead for dairy farms in latter half of 2011

Dairy managers continue catching up economically after a disastrous 2009 and 2010 business year, said Mike Hutjens, University of Illinois professor of animal sciences emeritus. “Milk producers need $17 per 100 pounds to cover feed, variable, fixed and labor costs with a modest return on assets,” Hutjens said. “Currently, milk prices have been favorable, but dairy managers need a full year of these margins to replace lost equity in 2009-2010.” Several factors will be critical to maintain a successful 2011 dairy business model.
