The Dairy Business Association (DBA) announced that Five Star Dairy, LLC of Elk Mound, Wisconsin was selected to receive the 2010 DBA Environmental Excellence Award. This award was developed to recognize a Wisconsin dairy producer in honor of its outstanding waste and pollution prevention projects that protect Wisconsin's natural resources.

Economic review of reform plans discussed

October 5, 2010
To assist the dairy industry in selecting the right policy reform, three dairy policy experts analyzed three main legislative proposals brought forth in the past year. They announced their findings at the 2010 World Dairy Expo just after presenting them to the U.S. Secretary of Agriculture’s Dairy Industry Advisory Committee in Washington, D.C. While not promoting any one plan over the other, Mark Stephenson, director of dairy policy analysis, University of Wisconsin – Madison; Chuck Nicholson, department of agribusiness, Cal Poly – San Luis Obispo; and Scott Brown, associate director, Food and Agriculture Policy Research Institute (FAPRI), University of Missouri – Columbia, displayed their assessments in an objective manner to allow people in the industry to draw their own conclusions.

Arson suspected in Specter-Casey supporter’s barn fire investigation

October 5, 2010
Firefighters helped extinguish an arsonist’s fire in a milking barn early in the morning Sept. 25 at a New York dairy family’s farm. According to The Oberver-Dispatch of Utica, New York, firefighters were dispatched at 2:20 a.m. to Dave and Robin Fitch’s dairy farm for a fire that investigators now say was intentionally set.

Southeast Dairy Coalition born in Atlanta, Georgia

September 24, 2010
As a follow up to the August 5 multi-state meeting in Athens, Tennessee, dairy producers from Virginia, North Carolina, Georgia, Kentucky, Tennessee, Mississippi and Arkansas returned to the table on Sept. 9 -- this time in Atlanta, Georgia -- where they voted to form the Southeast Dairy Coalition. Three producers from Florida, and one from Alabama, who had attended the August meeting in Tennessee, were unable to make the September meeting in Georgia; however, they each indicated their keen interest to participate as the coalition moves forward. The group is also reaching out to South Carolina and Louisiana to bring the number of states to 11.

Carbon footprint study tells dairy stewardship’s story

Dairy producers have a long history of being sustainable. We care about the environment and our cows, and we are constantly working to become more productive and efficient. In short, we know that sustainability is good business. It is all about making the most efficient use of natural resources – such as energy, water and waste byproducts. Today, we are presented with new challenges. Increasingly, consumers want products and services that they know are made responsibly. Research conducted by Dairy Management Inc., which manages the national dairy checkoff program, shows that “frequent milk users” – those who drink milk at least once per day – may increase their consumption if they believe dairy products are not only nutritious and good-tasting but also environmentally friendly.

Judge blocks higher payments to Pennsylvania dairy farmers

September 23, 2010
A federal judge is putting a freeze on a state order that would have generated higher payments to Pennsylvania dairy farmers. The Patriot-News of Harrisburg reported on its Web site Monday that U.S. Middle District Judge William W. Caldwell issued a preliminary injunction on the higher premium payments for out-of-state milk sold in Pennsylvania. The paper says about $6 million in annual payments is at issue.
