1921 was a monumental year for the United States dairy industry. In addition to passing the Packers and Stockyards Act of 1921, Congress also established standards for food weight and measurement in the District of Columbia. According to the law, milk or cream products could only be sold in authorized units, which included the gallon, pint, and half-pint. The sale of ice cream in non-standard sizes was reportedly the largest criminal activity in Washington, D.C. from 1921 to 1963 according to the archives of the United States House of Representatives.

Dr. Marissa Hake is a practicing calf veterinarian from northwest Ohio. She obtained her undergraduate degree in animal sciences from Michigan State in 2011 and continued there to finish her master’s in public health (MPH) and doctorate in veterinary medicine (DVM) in 2015.

Consumer awareness is top of mind for many people working in agriculture. Given the technology available, farmers are now in a unique position to connect directly with consumers and share their knowledge and individual experience. One manner in which this connection can be achieved and fostered is by hosting a virtual farm tour.

For many, navigating social media and deciding on the appropriate platform to share farm news can be difficult. To address some of these issues, Emma Andrew-Swarthout and Jennie Nguyen of the American Dairy Association North East (ADANE) hosted a webinar in May called “Telling Your Dairy Farm Story with a Virtual Farm Tour,” where they walked viewers through the steps to create and share their own virtual farm tour.
