Select Sires debuts new inbreeding management program called StrataGEN

April 13, 2012
Select Sires, Inc., announced the debut of StrataGEN, a unique, sequential breeding system that offers optimal use of genomic insights to help dairy producers achieve individual breeding goals while also minimizing inbreeding. StrataGEN uses genomic insights to categorize both daughter-proven sires and young sires into one of five unique genetic lines, based on common traits they’ve inherited from their ancestors, as confirmed by individual genomic testing. Each line is identified with a single color – orange, blue, green, yellow or red, for easy understanding and implementation into any dairy breeding program.

April 13, 2012
Pfizer Animal Health announced that EXCEDE (ceftiofur crystalline free acid) Sterile Suspension is now approved by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) for the treatment of acute postpartum metritis in just two doses. This new approval for EXCEDE represents a major step forward in modernizing metritis treatment options. For the industry to continue to improve the rate of meat drug residues found pre-slaughter in cull dairy cows, there is a need for on-label solutions that effectively treat metritis while also offering the assurance of residue risk avoidance.

ITW Agricultural Solutions introduces revolutionary RFID legband

March 26, 2012
ITW Agricultural Solutions announces a new product with the potential to revolutionize the way dairy cattle are identified in North America. The ITW DairyCUFF, a radio frequency ID (RFID) device, is labor efficient – allowing for reading from the back end of the cow where all work is performed – and the only method of ID that is animal friendly. Traditional ID tags, attached to the ear of the cattle, require a puncture wound to the animal, leaving her open to infection. In addition, ear tags are not visually strategic from the perspective of where most of the work on the cow is done. The maximum range for reading an RFID chip is only 24 inches. So with an operator working at the rear of a cow, ear tags are not visible by eye nor can they be read by a hand-held reader.
