Interactive story app for kids features dairy cow as the hero

Fat Red Couch, a developer of family-friendly apps, has released a new interactive children's app about a dancing Ayrshire cow. The story, titled "Prancing, Dancing Lily," was inspired by author Marsha Diane Arnold’s childhood growing up on a dairy farm.

In Focus: Virginia Tech will serve students milk from campus dairy

February 28, 2013
Virginia Tech Dining Services has partnered with the Department of Dairy Science to offer “Virginia Tech Milk.” Whole milk, skim milk and 1 percent chocolate milk will all be offered. Students will harvest the milk on campus from the herd of dairy cows at Virginia Tech’s Dairy Center. The milk will then be pasteurized by the James River Department of Agribusiness and served through the milk dispensers at Dietrick Hall.

DMI: Checkoff dollars can be spent on the National Dairy FARM program

February 28, 2013
Last September, the management board for Dairy Management, Inc. voted in the majority to endorse the spending of check-off dollars by the National Dairy Board to cover the cost of third-party verification for the National Dairy FARM Program. The FARM program is a nationwide voluntary program, administered by the National Milk Producers Federation (NMPF) that addresses dairy animal well-being. It requires dairy farms to follow animal care guidelines and undergo an on-farm evaluation conducted by a trained professional.

Farmore of Idaho also received the Gold Reinke Pride Award.

Oregon Dairy Export Consortium launched

February 23, 2013
The Oregon Dairy Products Commission has launched the Oregon Dairy Export Consortium, a collaborative initiative with the goal of increasing the volume and value of the state’s dairy product exports. The commission developed the effort in close cooperation with the Oregon Department of Agriculture's Agricultural Marketing and Development Program and several organizations and government agencies.

Holstein Association reports successful year-end numbers for 2012

February 11, 2013
Holstein Association USA reported that 2012 was a solid year for U.S. registered Holsteins and program activity, with interest in registered Holstein cattle continuing to grow. Registrations at the end of last year totaled 362,669, up 2,520 from 2011. “Looking down memory lane, 10 years ago in 2002, we registered 315,488 Holsteins,” said association CEO John M. Meyer, in his State of the Association address at regional member meetings this winter.
