MMPA recognizes 35-year members

Twenty-nine Michigan Milk Producers Association (MMPA) members were recognized as 35-year members at the 95th MMPA State Annual Delegate Meeting, March 15. MMPA President Ken Nobis congratulated and praised the members for their dedication to the cooperative. “We commend you for your dedication and loyalty to MMPA and the dairy industry over the last 35 years,” said President Nobis as he awarded each member with a plaque.

Pennsylvania soybean checkoff board awards $57,572 for four research projects

April 11, 2011
Four soybean research projects designed to provide reliable data to soybean growers and livestock producers who use soymeal have been awarded checkoff grants totaling $57,572 for the coming crop year by the Pennsylvania Soybean Promotion Board. The all-farmer board, which administers the national soybean checkoff program in the commonwealth, took the action in a day-long meeting with researchers in Harrisburg, Pennsylvania in mid-March.

National Mastitis Council celebrates 50 years of milk quality

The 50th Annual Meeting of the National Mastitis Council (NMC), held Jan. 23-26, in Arlington, Virginia, attracted 400 individuals. The event commemorated the organization’s long standing commitment to mastitis control and milk quality and the kick-off to a year-long celebration of NMC’s 50 years. Attendees from all over the world represented various facets of the dairy industry, including dairy producers, veterinarians, researchers, consultants, equipment and pharmaceutical suppliers, dairy plant field staff, extension educators and students.

Advanced Animal Diagnostics announces new board members

April 6, 2011
Advanced Animal Diagnostics (AAD), a developer of technologies for the rapid diagnosis of farm animal diseases, has restructured its board of directors following the close of its $11.3 million Series B round of equity financing in March. Randall Marcuson, former president and CEO of Embrex, will serve as chairman of the board for AAD. Also joining the board of directors are Jimmy Rosen, partner at Intersouth Partners, Dr. Simon Wheeler, managing director at Novartis Venture Fund, and Joy Parr Drach, AAD’s president and CEO.

WLIC honors board members at annual meeting

April 6, 2011
Three new faces were welcomed to the Wisconsin Livestock Identification Consortium Board of Directors at the WLIC Annual Meeting held March 1 at Wisconsin Farm Bureau. Brian Bolan from Wisconsin State Fair, Dan Sutherland from Johnsonville Sausage, and Tom DeMuth from AgSource were all welcomed to the Board of Directors. Dr. Thomas McKenna of Wisconsin Veterinary Diagnostic Laboratory and Richard Keller of Wisconsin Farmers Union were re-elected for their second term.

AgChat Foundation celebrates one year of connecting consumers with farmers and ranchers using social media

Americans may have noticed a new social media trend this past year: more Facebook posts from the farm, more tweets from the tractor and more blogs from the back forty. The timing of this social media "stampede" couldn’t be better, says Jeff Fowle, president of the AgChat Foundation. Celebrating its one-year anniversary today, the AgChat Foundation is a 100-percent volunteer organization formed to empower farmers and ranchers to effectively tell their stories using social media.

Brachyspina confirmed as undesirable recessive trait by Holstein Association USA

April 4, 2011
At their recent meeting, the Holstein Association USA board of directors voted to declare Brachyspina as an undesirable recessive trait in the Holstein breed, and approved the recording of testing results on Holstein Association USA pedigrees and other performance products. Brachyspina is expressed when an animal is homozygous for the undesirable allele, meaning that two carrier animals have been mated. Holsteins that are known carriers will be labeled with the code BY, and tested non-carriers will be labeled TY.

Rancho Teresita Dairy receives 2010 El Blanco Award from UC Davis

March 31, 2011
Long-time clients of the Veterinary Medicine Teaching and Research Center (VMTRC), Cornell and Teri Kasbergen of Rancho Teresita dairy, have received the 2010 El Blanco Award from the UC Davis School of Veterinary Medicine for ongoing contributions to the school's teaching mission and for their role in promoting important advances in animal health and well-being. The Kasbergens were nominated for the award by Terry Lehenbauer, DVM, associate director of the Tulare center, who notes, "Rancho Teresita is valued as one of the most significant dairy herd clients and research collaborators of the VMTRC."
