Dairy podcasts add bilingual factor to learning about industry issues

Purdue Extension's Dairy Digest, a weekly podcast that covers the dairy industry, is now available in Spanish. Created by Purdue Extension Dairy Specialists Tamilee Nennich and Mike Schutz, the two-minute digital recordings focus on general dairy practices, updates and animal welfare issues. Nennich said her team wants to use podcasts as a way to get information to producers more quickly. "This gives producers a chance to get up-to-date on hot topics without having to sit down in their offices," she said. "They can listen while they are working."

National DHIA awards $750 scholarship winners

February 4, 2011
The National Dairy Herd Information Association (DHIA) Scholarship Committee selected 24 high school seniors and college students as recipients of $750 scholarships. Judges evaluated applicants on scholastic achievements, leadership in school and community activities, and responses to DHI- and career-related questions. To be eligible for a National DHIA scholarship, applicants must be a family member or employee of a herd on DHI test, a family member of a DHI employee, or an employee of a DHI affiliate. The DHI affiliate for the herd or affiliate employee must be a National DHIA member.

Minnesota company taking over Veblen dairies

February 2, 2011
A Minnesota company will take over two dairies in Veblen, South Dakota. Riverview LLP will assume management immediately after a bankruptcy judge approved a purchase agreement late last week, according to the company and court documents. The two dairies, known as Veblen East and Veblen West, will be renamed Marshall Dairy.

LSU AgCenter vaccine fights cattle disease

February 2, 2011
Louisiana's agriculture department says a vaccine developed by scientists at the LSU AgCenter is showing results in preventing a disease that costs U.S. cattle and dairy producers an estimated $300 million a year. The disease is "anaplasmosis," which is spread by ticks and destroys red blood cells in cattle.

Pennsylvania agriculture secretary announced

February 1, 2011
Today, Governor Tom Corbett announced George Greig of Linesville, as Pennsylvania's Secretary of Agriculture. Acting Secretary Greig, a former dairy farmer andcurrent crop farmer,owns and operates a650acre farm in partnership with his brother in Crawford County.

 In an off-farm capacity, Acting Secretary Greig has served on the USDA Farm Service Agency PA State Committee,Crawford County Conservation District, Conneaut Township Supervisor and Great Lakes Regional Water Board. Healso currently serves as a State Board Member of the Pennsylvania Farm Bureau.

Pfizer Animal Health announces the return of the FFA and American Association of Bovine Practitioners (AABP) Foundation Support Program, which has resulted in more than $2.38 million in contributions to local FFA chapters and veterinary student scholarships since its inception in 2008.

Applications are being accepted for 20 college scholarships that are awarded by America’s dairy producers, through the National Dairy Promotion and Research Board (NDB). NDB funds, in part, Dairy Management Inc., which manages the national dairy checkoff program.
