Iowa's Master Hoof Care Program graduates five

September 3, 2010
Five men, whose vocations included veterinarians, managers and professional hoof trimmers, participated in Iowa State University's Master Hoof Care Program in July. The course took place at the ISU Dairy in Ames, Iowa. Dr. Jan Shearer of the Iowa State, College of Veterinary Medicine, VDPAM was the main instructor for this course.

Telling agriculture’s story through social media

This summer, NutriDense Silage held its “Web Moo.0” Contest to highlight how the dairy industry is using social media to positively “agvocate” to consumers. Dairy producers were invited to submit videos, photos or blog posts describing their efforts, and fifth-generation Michigan dairy producer Ashley Messing took home the top prize.

Pfizer Animal Health and the American Association of Bovine Practitioners (AABP) Foundation provided financial support to 29 veterinary medical students this year through a scholarship program. Annual event teaches dairy lessons to people of all ages

Michigan State University hosted a week of dairy-focused events July 19-23 during the 14th annual Michigan Dairy Expo. The week included a full schedule of youth contests and activities, a youth and open dairy cattle show, a sale to raise money for scholarships and youth dairy programming; and kid-focused activities for youth and families from Lansing and the surrounding areas.

Vita Plus Chick Day draws record attendance

What started as a small event at a restaurant in Northern Wisconsin has grown from 15 participants to more than 150. The Vita Plus Chick Day is an event for women to gather, see another dairy operation and learn from speakers and one another. This year it was held Aug. 20 at Ocooch Dairy near Hillsboro, Wisconsin.

In an effort to educate local officials about modern agriculture, the Professional Dairy Producers of Wisconsin (PDPW) joined forces with the Wisconsin Counties Association and Wisconsin Towns Association as part of the Agriculture Community Engagement (ACE) program to host two old-fashioned Twilight Meetings on Aug. 11 and 12.

The Center for Dairy Excellence in Pennsylvania hosted “Open House and Dairy Tours” at three dairy farms this summer. The events were held at Central Manor Dairy, owned by the Harnish family in Washington, Boro; Woodedge Dairy, owned by the Kauffmans in Reedsville; and Zylstra Dairy Farm Inc. owned by the Zylstra family in Freidens.
