Kentucky leaders discuss future of dairy at annual meeting

March 3, 2010
The Kentucky Dairy Partners Meeting was held March 2-3 in Cave City, Kentucky. About 230 people, 86 of which are dairy farmers, attended the meeting, which is a collaborative effort among the Kentucky Dairy Development Council, Kentucky ADA/SUDIA, Kentucky Department of Agriculture and University of Kentucky Cooperative Extension Service.

New York Farm Show celebrates 25 years

Despite heavy snowfall in the Northeast last week, there was no stopping the New York Farm show from celebrating its 25th anniversary in grand style. The show, held in Syracuse, New York, February 25-27, featured over 425 commercial exhibits spread across multiple buildings at the New York State Fairgrounds.

Grassroots coalition leads meetings about dairy pricing

The Dairy Policy Action Coalition (DPAC), initatied in Pennsylvania last fall, is taking a stand for milk pricing -- and everything that comes with it. On February 22, more than 200 dairy farmers came together to ask questions and voice their opinions concerning the current milk pricing system and the government’s role and action in the matter.

Innovative methods found at World Ag Expo

As we traveled from cold, winter climates to a warmer central California, we were disappointed by cool, rainy weather that greeted us when we arrived. But as a world of agriculture opened before us, we popped up our umbrellas, determined our shoes could withstand some mud and embarked on a few exciting days at World Ag Expo. The event was held February 9-11 in Tulare, California. With more than 1,600 exhibitors across 2.6 million square feet, it is the world’s largest agricultural exposition.

Lessons learned at Illinois Dairy Day

February 1, 2010
Last year has been noted as one of the most economically challenging years in the last 30 years. In his last Dairy Day address before retiring as a University of Illinois Extension dairy specialist at the end of the year, Mike Hutjens reviewed lessons learned in 2009 and throughout his extension career. There was some good news for producers in the state. Illinois ended the year with the same number of cows as it had when it started.

Managers Academy 2010

More than 75 dairy producers and allied industry leaders convened in Seattle, Washington, for the sixth annual Managers Academy. The three-day event included executive-level training by business coaches Dr. David Kohl and David Parker and a day of tours to agricultural businesses in the Seattle area, including Werkhoven Dairy Farm in Monroe, Washington; Chateau Ste. Michelle Winery and Pike Place Fish Market in downtown Seattle.

Vita Plus clients told to reshape goals at Dairy Summit 2009

Every year, organizers of the Vita Plus Corporation Dairy Summit use a mountain theme to encourage the dairy producers in attendance to set goals and place their operations in a position to obtain those goals. However, from the time producers left the previous Dairy Summit in early December 2008 until this year’s summit, December 2 and 3, the dairy industry shifted so much that in 2009 Vita Plus begged the question “Who moved my mountain?” to set the stage for its event.
