Record attendance at Cows on the Concourse

Cows on the Concourse brought consumers and cows face-to-face in Madison, Wisconsin, on Saturday June 2. This year, a record number of families took part in the annual tradition, which serves as the official kick off of June Dairy Month in Dane County. Cows on the Concourse took place on the Capitol Square in downtown Madison, where the Dane County Farmers’ Market also connects consumers with farmers.

Building the bridge to dairy transitions

The Center for Dairy Excellence recently hosted Train The Trainer, a two-day program titled Building the Bridge to Dairy Transition. Participants included employees from a number of different fields that wished to enhance their existing succession and transition facilitation skills. Attendees listened to six speakers covering topics such as family businesses, financial planning and insurance, dairy transition planning, legal considerations and accounting.

Oakhurst Dairy marks 90th anniversary

Maybe it should come as no surprise that Oakhurst Dairy has continued to thrive amid a recession. After all, this is a company that survived the Great Depression. The Portland, Maine, company got its start in the early 1920s making deliveries with two horse-drawn milk wagons. Today the company delivers its products with a fleet of biofuel-powered trucks. It’s one of many changes that have occurred at the dairy processing company that is celebrating its 90th anniversary this year.

Building leadership skills and networking were front and center as more than 360 attended the 2012 Wisconsin Ag Women’s Summit April 27-28 at the Kalahari Resort in Wisconsin Dells. The summit’s full agenda included topics such as health and wellness, building social capital, practical time management, farm safety, social media and financial and tax tips. “It was apparent that the hundreds ofagriculturally passionate womenin attendance lefton a positive note,” said Deb Raemisch, Wisconsin Farm Bureau Federation (WFBF) director of member relations.

North American Manure Expo returns to Wisconsin on Aug. 22

Celebrating its 10th year, the North American Manure Expo will focus on “Professional Manure Management” with a wide variety of presentations to occur throughout the day. The expo combines three attractions – technology demonstrations, educational events and trade show – into a one-day national event. Beginning in 2001, the University of Wisconsin was approached by several custom manure applicators from around the region requesting a show that provides a side-by-side comparison of agitation and application equipment to help determine which best meets individual needs. From this request, the first show was born in August of 2001 near Prairie Du Sac, Wisconsin.
