Milk quality experts gather at NMC annual meeting

More than 390 milk quality, mastitis and udder health researchers, dairy producers and dairy industry partners attended the National Mastitis Council (NMC) 51st Annual Meeting held Jan. 22-24, in St. Pete Beach, Florida. The meeting provided a forum for exchanging information pertaining to mastitis control, udder health, quality milk production and the safe and judicious use of antimicrobials on farm.

Western Canadian Dairy Seminar celebrates ‘30 Years of Advancing Dairy Knowledge’

Designed for people who want to improve their knowledge and decision-making abilities in dairy production and management, the 30th Western Canadian Dairy Seminar welcomes dairy producers, extension specialists, researchers, and dairy service and supply representatives. Each year a wide variety of topics are presented ranging from nutrition and reproduction to dairy policy and challenges facing the dairy industry. This year’s event will be held March 6-9 at the Sheraton Red Deer in Red Deer, Alberta. With the theme, “30 Years of Advancing Dairy Knowledge,” the seminar will take a special anniversary look back at the last 30 years and how far the industry has advanced.

Robots on a grazing dairy give Michigan couple ‘freedom’

Editor’s note: The following information was provided by Howard and Mary Jo Straub during their presentation, “Grazing and robots: Do they mix?” at the North-Central Ohio Grazing Conference Jan. 26-27, 2012 in Dalton, Ohio. Howard and Mary Jo Straub of Saint Johns, Michigan, began dairying in 1972 with 26 cows. As they grew their family and the herd over the years, they discovered that grazing was the management style that worked best for them. In 2000, the couple, along with daughter Terri Hawbaker, converted their then double-four herringbone parlor to a double-11 swing parlor to accommodate the now-rotational grazing herd of 100.

Today’s Agriculture opens doors; reveals positive feedback

PennAg Industries Association, on behalf of the Pennsylvania Alliance for Livestock Care and Well-Being and the Pennsylvania Department of Agriculture, received valuable feedback from the Today’s Agriculture exhibit from its target audience – Farm Show visitors – thanks to a series of interviews conducted by the Animal Agriculture Alliance, a non-profit national animal agriculture organization based in Washington, D.C. On Thursday, Jan. 12 and Friday, Jan. 13, Alliance staff filmed 32 visitors and interviewed an additional 100 visitors after they toured the 10,000 square foot Today’s Agriculture exhibit at the 2012 Pennsylvania Farm Show.
